Role: Application Support Engineer / Developer

Location: Hybrid (Central London)

The Opportunity:

Our client, a leading organisation specialising in medical imaging technology and clinical research, is looking for a Developer to join its growing technology team.

This is a varied position that combines software development with platform / application support, offering the opportunity to work on both a well-established legacy platform and a modern cloud-based application used to support global clinical trials.

The role centers around the companies core platform, and providing high level application support in a production environment. Rather than being a purely development-focused role, you'll play a key part in ensuring the reliability and ongoing evolution of business-critical platforms. You'll work closely with developers, technical teams and stakeholders to troubleshoot complex issues, deliver new functionality and help shape the future of the organisation's technology landscape.

This role would suit someone who enjoys solving technical problems, working across multiple technologies and balancing day-to-day platform support with longer-term development projects.

Key Responsibilities:

Platform Support & Maintenance

  • Provide end-to-end support for both legacy and modern clinical imaging platforms
  • Manage and prioritise technical support requests, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently
  • Troubleshoot complex application and infrastructure issues across multiple environments

Software Development & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain scripts to support platform configuration and data management
  • Contribute to feature development across both legacy and cloud-based applications
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing workflows, processes and system performance

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with development teams to interpret and implement new technical requirements
  • Act as a technical point of contact for developers, testers and wider internal teams
  • Promote knowledge sharing and software development best practices across the business

Documentation & Technical Standards

  • Produce and maintain clear technical documentation
  • Support the ongoing evolution of development standards and internal processes

What We're Looking For:

Essential Experience:

  • Degree in Computer Science or related discipline
  • In depth experience working within Linux / Unix environments
  • Strong scripting experience using Bash and/or Python
  • Experience working with SQL databases
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming principles
  • Proven experience troubleshooting complex technical issues within production environments
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Desirable:

  • Commercial experience with Java and/or C#
  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure
  • Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes and Azure DevOps
  • Experience using Git for source control
  • Front-end development experience, ideally with React
  • Understanding of Agile software development methodologies
  • Experience working with medical imaging technologies or DICOM standards

If you're a Software Engineer, Developer or Application/Platform Support Engineer with a passion for solving complex technical challenges and are looking for a varied role that combines platform support with software development, we'd love to hear from you.

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
