Applications are invited for a joint appointment asTenure-Track Assistant Professor in AI and Law in the Faculty of Law and the School of Computing and Data Science(Ref.: 536256), to commence on July 1st, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of the second three-year fixed-term contract.

Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law, the longest-established law school in Hong Kong, plays a leading role in legal education in Hong Kong and Asia through its various undergraduate, research, postgraduate, and taught postgraduate programmes covering a wide range of legal subject areas. The Faculty is ranked among the top 20 in the 2026 QS World University Rankings by subject for Law & Legal Studies. It is the largest and oldest legal research and law teaching institution in Hong Kong, currently consisting of over 80 teaching members and over 2,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The School of Computing and Data Science

The School of Computing and Data Science (CDS) strives to advance education and research across the fields of computing and data science, artificial intelligence, statistical decision sciences, fintech, and actuarial science. It aims to take an integrated approach to reform these academic disciplines and foster multidisciplinary research collaboration within the University and beyond. CDS is ranked 18th globally in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, 27th in Computer Science and Information Systems, and 32nd in Statistics and Operational Research in the QS World University Subject Rankings. Applicants should normally have a first degree in Law (e.g., LLB, BA(Jurisprudence) and JD) and an additional postgraduate degree in Law (e.g., LLM, PhD, D Phil and SJD). Those who do not have an additional postgraduate degree in Law are also encouraged to apply if there is evidence of a strong publication record and relevant experience in teaching, legal practice or the judiciary, or if they possess a postgraduate degree in a non-law discipline. Applicants should be academically strong and demonstrate potential for excellence as teachers and researchers.

The appointee will also be a member of the HKU Musketeers Foundation Institute of Data Science (HKU-IDS) under this joint appointment. He/She will be expected to make a significant contribution to the Faculty’s research profile by producing high-quality research and actively participating in research communities. He/She will also be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of teaching in the Faculty’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary.
