About The Role

We are seeking a Fixed Term Research Officer in Advanced Digital Modelling to join Professor Beckmann’s Semantic AI research group at Swansea University. Based within the Faculty of Science and Engineering, you will collaborate with vibrant research communities in modelling, data, AI, and materials manufacturing.

You will drive innovation to realise the vision of 'Steel as a Service' by developing a modular, human-centric digital platform based on Industrial Data Spaces. This platform will enable a seamless, multi-directional flow of temporally varying material information across the steel value chain, directly contributing to a net-zero, sustainable future for the UK steel sector.

Key responsibilities include resolving challenges in data integration, process modelling, and digital material passports by deploying semantic technologies and generative AI. You will maintain strong ties with the IGNITE hub, publish in refereed journals, and collaborate with academic partners and over industrial stakeholders.

We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin), religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.

As an inclusive and welcoming workplace, we value people for their skills regardless of their background. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English.

Welsh Language Skills

The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
