Senior Backend Python Developer (Contract)

Contract: Rolling 3-Month Contract

Location: Fully Remote (UK Based Only)

Rate: £300 per day

IR35 Status: Outside IR35

Start Date: ASAP

The Opportunity

We're working with a growing technology-driven organisation looking for a strong Senior Backend Python Developer to join their engineering team on an initial 3-month contract with a high likelihood of extension.

This is a hands-on backend-focused role where you'll be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable services, APIs, and integrations that underpin critical business applications. You'll be working closely with architects, product teams, and fellow engineers to deliver high-quality solutions in a fast-paced Agile environment.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Python developer with a strong understanding of modern backend engineering principles, cloud-native development, and API design.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend applications and services using Python

Build and optimise RESTful APIs and microservices

Develop integrations between internal and third-party systems

Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code

Participate in technical design discussions and architectural decisions

Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve complex technical issues

Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes

Collaborate with product, engineering, and DevOps teams to deliver high-quality solutions

Perform code reviews and champion engineering best practices

Support ongoing improvements to performance, scalability, and security

Required Skills & Experience

Strong commercial experience developing backend applications using Python

Experience building scalable APIs and distributed systems

Strong understanding of software engineering best practices and design patterns

Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL

Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)

Familiarity with Docker and containerised deployments

Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows

Understanding of CI/CD pipelines and automated testing

Experience working within Agile delivery environments

Strong problem-solving and debugging skills

Desirable Experience

Experience with FastAPI, Django, or Flask

Exposure to event-driven architectures and messaging technologies

Experience building data-intensive applications

Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code practices

Bonus Skills

Any commercial or personal experience with AI, Machine Learning, Generative AI, or Large Language Models (LLMs) would be highly beneficial, including:

Integrating LLM APIs into applications

Building AI-powered features or workflows

Experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure AI, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar technologies

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions

AI agents and workflow automation
