Role Purpose

As an agency dedicated to cycling and the great outdoors, we help brands connect with riders and outdoor enthusiasts across the world through their social channels.

As Social Media Manager, your role is to plan, drive and implement social media marketing for SHIFT Active Media clients. You will take responsibility for ensuring that all social content is delivered against a strategic plan that you will have helped create and own moving forward, is creatively brilliant, and is effective and achievable within budget.

The role will require you to:

  • Develop new social strategies and content plans that connect and build a strong affinity with consumers. As a Social Media Manager, your responsibilities for the strategic side of the role will be greater than as an Exec, and you will not only be creating the content, but planning it and contributing much more to the research and strategy side of the team too.
  • Interpret information from various sources (e.g. subject matter experts, research docs, competitor activity, Google Analytics, white papers, and platform trends) to inform your strategic and tactical recommendations.
  • Develop recommendations across a range of social channels and distil your ideas and thoughts into well-articulated plans with a clear rationale.
  • Take an active role in creating and directing the development of new social creative, including generating new ways of creating quality content at the scale required by our clients. This will include working as part of an integrated team (creative, media, and PR) on large campaigns, as well as solo social campaigns and ongoing retained ‘always-on’ social programmes.
  • Researching and compiling reports and insights on ambassadors, influencers and creators for our clients to work with as part of campaigns and always-on social and content activity.
  • Writing, delivering, and managing the process of social briefs to get the best from both internal and external creative suppliers, such as SHIFT’s creative team, athletes, ambassadors, and client teams.
  • Determine the evaluation requirements and produce reporting for the social clients you manage on a monthly or quarterly basis (and ad hoc as required).
  • Writing and editing copy, creating and editing images, and creating, editing and working with video to ensure effective content and quality standards are upheld, and that content is correctly tailored for each brand, aligned to tone of voice and style guides.
  • Develop a strong day-to-day relationship with key clients and internal stakeholders, being recognisable as the trusted ‘face’ of SHIFT social to our clients that you directly manage. Part of this is understanding that sometimes the event-driven nature of our work means occasional weekend and evening work, to be agreed with lots of notice in advance.
  • Produce thought leadership materials for SHIFT marketing, including blog posts, LinkedIn articles, and PR opportunities.
  • When a hire is made for the role, you will manage a Social Media Exec, ensuring their output is of a high quality and on plan, and supporting and covering them at key periods.

Skills, behaviours, and competencies associated with this role

  • Cycling and outdoor passion: You don’t need to ride, run, or hike like a pro, but you must be passionate about the outdoors and enjoy keeping up with all the latest news from events and races, and not just in your preferred discipline. You’ll want to develop your career in the cycling and outdoor industry.
  • Interpersonal skills: As someone who will work closely with internal teams and clients, you must be confident in developing good relationships with a wide range of people, fostering collaboration, taking ownership and responsibility, and communicating clearly and effectively.
  • Social and content native: You are passionate about and embrace the opportunities presented by social media. You will have an expert grasp of how channels and platforms work, understand what’s possible, and be proactive in recommending important trends to our agency and clients, including new tools and services, ensuring our clients stay ahead of the curve with platform innovations.
  • Community management: You can assess comments and direct messages for authenticity and risk promptly, escalating any issues to the wider team or client with a recommended approach that protects brand reputation.
  • Creativity: You enjoy coming up with creative ideas to help solve client problems, as well as providing feedback on the ideas of others. You demonstrate this creativity in the written and visual content you create for our clients and agency.
  • Video and image production skills: You will be skilled to a proficient level at editing video and images using platforms like Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, and Canva. You will understand what makes good social multimedia content, and be comfortable producing content that resonates with audiences on these channels and for clients.
  • Turning data into insights: Ability to interpret social data and external sources to drive content optimisation and campaign adjustments in real-time.
  • Written and presentation skills: You’re able to produce accurate and well-crafted presentations and documents, and present these confidently and engagingly. You can communicate complex things in a simple, understandable way, and can sub-edit work of others.
  • Critical thinking and evaluation: You think through problems, make informed choices, and consult on key decisions where needed. You evaluate ideas against briefs and requirements and, where needed, provide constructive feedback.
  • Reliable and self-organising: With lots going on, you’re organised and able to manage your own time; you take responsibility for getting things done and can be relied upon to do things within given timescales. You’ll self-organise using platforms like ClickUp and Slack, planning your own time to deliver the work required, and proactively communicating as needed with the right people.
  • Eager to learn and show leadership: This is an important role in SHIFT, and you will be looked to for expertise and leadership in this specialist domain. You will bring confidence as well as humility to the role, helping others learn from your knowledge, especially if/when more junior hires are made in the team.

Requirements for the role:

  • Experience: 3-5 years of experience in social media marketing, managing campaigns and social media accounts.
  • Social platforms: Strong working knowledge and experience using Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
  • Cycling: Interest in and / or knowledge of cycling
  • Hybrid working: Able to work from our Bath, UK office 3 days a week
  • Artificial intelligence: Experience in using AI-powered social media tools to edit content, enhance content performance, streamline workflows, and gain actionable insights is a plus
