Head of Engineer (ML)
London – 4/5 days PW
Up to £300k + equity
- London AI startup with Series A lined up for late 2025.
- Fantastic opportunity to lead and scale an extremely talented ML engineering team.
- The initial split will be 60% hands-on / 40% leadership.
This is a super exciting role where you will have the opportunity to drive technical strategy and execution of large language model training and deployment.
The bar is extremely high when it comes to engineering standards. The ideal background will be someone who has spent time at a FAANG company and multiple years at a high-growth AI startup. This is essential, so if you can tick the boxes outlined in the requirements below then it's definitely worth applying.
Whatever your background, you will need to showcase your experience managing and optimising large GPU clusters, working with distributed training workloads and LLMs, ideally with a focus on 50B+ parameter models.
It's worth noting that whilst this is ultimately a leadership position, there will be a chunk of hands-on work required at the beginning.
Essentials:
- Strong infrastructure background and experience managing and optimising large GPU clusters.
- Knowledge of network configuration, resource allocation, and fault tolerance.
- Experience fine-tuning LLM architecture, hyperparameters, and training techniques to achieve optimal performance on large-scale GPU clusters.
- Background designing and managing APIs that have been used to facilitate access to fine-tuned language models.
- Evidence of establishing a high-performing engineering culture and implementing engineering excellence across an organisation.
Relevant MLE areas/frameworks:
- High throughput, low latency multi-GPU serving.
- High throughput training pipelines to train language models.
- Reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) infrastructure.
- Qubeflow, Slurm, Ray, PyTorch Lightning, Deepspeed, Skypilot.
Given how specialised this role is, I am pleased to say that relocation packages are available to help facilitate moves from overseas.
Please note that this role is predominantly 100% on-site. We're looking for people willing to be in the office 4-5 days a week.
Reach out to Jamie Forgan at SR2 () if your profile matches the above and we can find time to discuss the role and company in more detail.
