Excellent opportunity to progress into R&D Manager

We're looking for a hands-onSenior Solutions Engineer with strong Java development experience who wants to play a key role in shaping an increasinglyAI-driven, ERP-agnostic business.

This is much more than a traditional Java development position.

You'll initially have a strong focus on Java development, software quality and building out the company's agentic AI capabilities. Over time, the role will broaden acrossAWS, DevOps, infrastructure, databases, security and technical leadership, giving you genuine ownership and the opportunity to develop into a formal leadership position.

The long-term aim is for the successful individual to progress into an R&D Manager position within around 12 months, subject to performance and demonstrating the technical leadership capability to take that next step.

What you'll be doing

You'll work across software development, infrastructure and technical improvement, including:

  • Designing, developing and maintaining high-quality software, primarily using Java
  • Exploring and applyingAI tools and techniques throughout the development lifecycle to improve quality and productivity
  • Helping to build and develop the company'sagentic AI capabilities
  • Reviewing other developers' code and providing constructive feedback around quality, structure, maintainability and potential failure scenarios
  • Supporting development standards, testing and overall software quality
  • Producing clear technical and user documentation
  • Working with theAWS technology stack and contributing to DevOps practices
  • Supporting the AWS environment, Linux/server administration, patching and monitoring
  • Working with technologies includingCloudWatch, Nagios, firewalls, SSL and DNS
  • Supporting server and operating system migrations
  • ManagingPostgreSQL databases, including backups, recovery/PITR, SQL execution and migrations
  • Supporting vulnerability management and wider security activity
  • Working with security frameworks and tools including penetration testing, MDR, disaster recovery and vulnerability management
  • Supporting administration across AWS, Microsoft technologies and other business platforms
Technical leadership

This role is also about helping the wider team develop.

You'll be expected to:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers
  • Encourage good development and engineering practices
  • Mentor colleagues and share knowledge
  • Help bridge the gap between development, infrastructure, testing, implementation, support and project teams
  • Take increasing ownership of technical decisions and standards
  • Develop your leadership capability with the opportunity to progress into R&D Manager
Working with the wider business

You'll work closely with Software Testers, Business Analysts, Project Managers, Implementers, Support teams and customers.

You'll help ensure development work is properly handed over into testing, including recorded demonstrations, configuration and setup information, and ongoing support with bug investigation and resolution.

Customer experience is important here. We're looking for someone who understands that excellent technology isn't just about writing good code — it's about delivering software that works well for the people using it.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical ability with the personality and communication skills to bring people with them.

You'll ideally have:

  • Strong commercial experience developing inJava
  • Good knowledge ofAWS
  • Strong understanding of DevOps and cloud environments
  • Experience withLinux/server administration
  • Experience working withPostgreSQL
  • An understanding of software security, vulnerability management and infrastructure security
  • Experience reviewing code and maintaining high development standards
  • Experience using AI tools within software development, or a genuine enthusiasm for exploring how AI can improve engineering
  • Previous experience providing technical guidance or mentoring to other engineers
  • Excellent communication skills and the confidence to work with people across technical and non-technical teams

You don't need to be an expert in every area from day one. What's particularly important is that you'recurious, hands-on and keen to broaden your technical responsibilities.

The person

We're particularly interested in someone who is excited by the opportunity to help shape anAI-driven technology environment.

You'll be someone who:

  • Enjoys challenging yourself and learning new technologies
  • Is naturally curious about AI and its practical applications
  • Can communicate technical ideas clearly and without unnecessary jargon
  • Builds strong relationships with colleagues and customers
  • Has the empathy and personality to bring people with them through change
  • Takes ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do
  • Wants to develop into a genuine technical leader
What's on offer?
  • £50,000–£55,000 salary
  • 3% bonus opportunity
  • Fully remote working within the UK
  • Approximatelyfour trips per year to the South Coast
  • A broad and varied technical role across Java, AWS, DevOps, AI, databases and security
  • Genuine opportunity to progress intoR&D Manager within approximately 12 months
  • The chance to help shape the company's AI and technology strategy as it moves towards an ERP-agnostic future
  • A role where your ideas, technical expertise and leadership potential can make a real difference

If you're a strong Java engineer who wants to move beyond pure development and take ownership across technology, AI and engineering leadership, we'd love to hear from you.

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
