The Computer Science Research Centre (CSRC) within the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer in AI covering topics including Natural Language Processing, Large Machine Learning Models, Neurosymbolic AI, Trustworthy Machine Learning, and Applications of AI/ML in Automated Reasoning, Security or Software/Systems Development.

This post is aligned to the Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE) group within CSRC and is part of a strategic investment in AI. Our current research focuses on solving foundational and real-world problems in areas such as Natural Language Processing, Optimisation, Audio and Vision, AI for Health and Medical Applications, Robotics, and Security.

The postholder will be expected to expand our dynamic team of internationally recognised AI researchers and linking their work across the University including NICE; Surrey Centre for Cybersecurity; Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP); the 5G/6G Innovation Centre; the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI Institute (PAI) and the Surrey Space Institute. Thus, the position provides an opportunity to drive a strategic research direction and align colleagues within CSRC and beyond.

The candidate must have wide knowledge of the AI field, with an internationally recognised track record of publications in top-tier venues, evidence of research income, ideally with experience of working with industry and/or government.

Surrey has an established international reputation in AI research, 1st in the UK for computer vision and top 5 for AI, computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing (CSRankings.org) and were 7th in the UK for REF2021 outputs in Computer Science research. Computer Science and CVSSP are at the core of PAI, established in 2021 as a pan-University initiative which brings together leading AI research with discipline expertise across health, social, behavioural and engineering sciences, business, law and the creative arts to shape future AI for the benefit of people and society. PAI leads a portfolio of over £100m in grant awards including major research activities in creative industries and healthcare, and two doctoral training programmes with funding for over 100 PhD researchers: the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Digital Media Inclusion and the Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Training Network in AI-Enabled Digital Accessibility.

AI features in both our UG and MSc curricula as well as training within the CDTs. The candidate would contribute to these as well as undertaking other teaching duties in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The postholder will benefit from colleague support across the School and wider University to advance their career. Our welcoming community nurtures staff to help them build flourishing careers. They will become a core member of the PAI, supporting the growth of collaborative cross-disciplinary research and training as Surrey delivers its future vision.

What Is an AI Forward Deployed Engineer? The Fastest-Growing Job in AI for 2026

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
