About the Role

Join Ocado Technology as a Cloud Engineer to bridge the gap between our global Cloud Platform and Edge Infrastructure. Working within the Workload Management Team, you will drive automation and integration across two core technical domains:
Linux Edge & AWS IoT Ecosystem
You will automate deployments to Linux-based machines (such as NUC and Fitlet) as a vital part of the Ocado Technology Platform (OTP) ecosystem, focusing on Python, Linux expertise, and AWS IoT for seamless connectivity.

PLC Automation & Windows Ecosystem
You will design pipelines and automate software deployments to PLC devices using TIA Portal (Siemens SDK) and TwinCAT. This involves C# development on Windows and architecting GitLab CI/CD automation powered by Python.

Roles & Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be a key driver in bridging our cloud platform with physical automation. Your responsibilities include:

  • Edge & PLC Integration: Designing and maintaining management services for Linux-based edge devices and PLC systems (Siemens, Beckhoff).
  • Automation Development: Developing robust automation tools using Python (for Linux/IoT) and C# (for Windows-based SDKs like TIA Openness and TwinCAT ADS).
  • Scalable Architecture: Architecting solutions for automated, repeatable deployment across numerous global sites, ensuring scale is at the forefront of every design.
  • System Visibility: Implementing monitoring and observability solutions to provide real-time visibility into infrastructure health.
  • Cloud Innovation: Staying at the forefront of AWS and cloud advancements to introduce innovative solutions to the ecosystem.
  • Technical Leadership: Sharing expertise to foster team development and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Agile Collaboration: Forging deep bonds with stakeholders and cross-functional teams within an Agile environment.
  • Production Support: Ensuring system reliability by supporting production environments and participating in a 24/7 on-call rota.

About you

  • Cloud Proficiency: Strong experience with AWS, specifically IoT Core, ECS, IAM, and CloudFormation.
  • Industrial Automation Logic: A functional understanding of PLC programming logic and experience using APIs (TIA Openness, TwinCAT ADS) to automate engineering tasks (Note: Professional PLC programming expertise is not required).
  • Software Development: Solid Python skills and experience in Windows-based development (preferably C#).
  • Quality Assurance: A firm grasp of the testing pyramid (Unit, Integration, E2E) and experience applying these within AWS and Docker environments.
  • DevOps Mastery: Experience with CI/CD pipelines (preferably GitLab), source control, and modern deployment strategies.
  • Automation Mindset: A strong "Automate Everything" ambition and a detail-oriented approach to problem-solving.
  • Adaptability: The ability to learn quickly and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Bonus points for:

  • Data Tools: Experience with SQL or Google BigQuery.
  • Frontend Development: Hands-on experience with React and JavaScript.
  • Observability: Proficiency with monitoring tools like ELK stack, Grafana, or PagerDuty.
  • Lifecycle Management: Proven experience in building end-to-end software lifecycles.
