AI/ML Engineer (PhD graduate)

As an AI/ML Engineer, you'll work on a diverse range of advanced research programmes where no two projects are the same. You'll investigate emerging machine learning techniques, develop novel algorithms and build proof-of-concept systems that address complex technical challenges.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Researching and evaluating state-of-the-art AI and machine learning techniques.
  • Designing, implementing and training machine learning models for novel applications.
  • Developing proof-of-concept systems and rapid prototypes.
  • Designing experiments, analysing results and translating findings into practical engineering solutions.
  • Applying scientific thinking to solve complex multidisciplinary problems.
  • Collaborating with software engineers, mathematicians, physicists and systems engineers.
  • Presenting technical findings to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Contributing to research strategy and identifying future technical opportunities.

This role offers significant technical variety, allowing you to work across multiple research programmes rather than focusing on a single long-term project.

About You
  • A PhD (or be close to completing one) in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or another highly quantitative discipline.
  • Research experience involving machine learning, deep learning, optimisation or statistical modelling.
  • Strong Python programming skills.
  • Experience with frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX or Keras.
  • Experience designing experiments, evaluating model performance and interpreting results.
  • A curious mindset and a passion for exploring emerging technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating within highly technical multidisciplinary teams.

Why Apply?
This role offers an excellent transition from academia into industry, providing the opportunity to:
  • Work on technically challenging research with real-world impact.
  • Continue solving novel problems rather than maintaining production software.
  • Collaborate with leading scientists, engineers and AI specialists.
  • Develop your technical expertise across a wide variety of emerging technologies.
  • Enjoy long-term career progression within an advanced R&D environment.
  • Receive a competitive salary, annual bonus and comprehensive benefits package.

This is an excellent opportunity for PhD graduates and early-career researchers looking to apply their expertise in a collaborative, innovation-led environment where cutting-edge AI research directly contributes to solving complex national security and defence challenges.

Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance and must be sole British. This position is based on-site in Cambridge and does not offer visa sponsorship.

What Is an AI Forward Deployed Engineer? The Fastest-Growing Job in AI for 2026

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
