NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

This is a permanent, part-time post of 22.3 hours per week,. The post holder will work 22.3 hours, Monday to Wednesday and will have a contractual requirement to participate in the weekend and public holiday rota.

Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours.

Applicants require an I.B.M.S. accredited, BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences and must be registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist. Graduates who expect to complete their degree and attain HCPC Registration as Biomedical Scientists in the near future are welcome to apply. The applicant will require to have successfully attained the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology, or will be expected to complete the Specialist Diploma as part of their training to attain the position.

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated candidates for the full time post of Specialist Biomedical Scientist (SBMS) within the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory, Glasgow (SMiRL) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
SMiRL plays a key role in the provision of specialist and reference testing for a wide range of pathogens, as well as supporting clinical decisions, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, vaccine surveillance, public health policy formulation, and outbreak management for the Scottish population. SMiRL actively participates in internal and external training and education, collaborative research and development, and has a close working relationship with Public Health Scotland (PHS) and other stakeholders responsible for human and animal health in Scotland. The laboratory holds UKAS accreditation for ISO 15189 standards
Specialist Biomedical Scientists (SBMS) in SMiRL are responsible for the technical aspects of delivering a range of highly specialised phenotypic and molecular assays using the most up to date scientific analysis in conjunction with traditional methods of culture, microscopy and specialist techniques. The SBMS post is responsible for carrying out the duties required to provide an efficient reference service that is necessary for effective patient care and to supervise, instruct, train and act as a mentor to less experienced biomedical scientists and support staff. They will also be required to offer specialist advice and guidance on the services available to users and to provide information about the analyses that are performed.
The laboratory receives approximately 30,000 request per annum which are direct referrals from every diagnostic Microbiology laboratory in Scotland and provides specialist and reference testing services for a range of pathogens. The specialist testing and the clinical advice delivered by the Department have a direct input in assisting with patient management across Scotland. The laboratory also produces valuable data which is used for surveillance purposes and during outbreak investigations to assist Public Health Scotland.
