ABOUT THE ROLE

A post-doctoral research position is available to work with Dr. R. Morton on the RiPSAW project at Northumbria University. This project, funded by UKRI Future Leader Fellowship, is focused on investigating the role of Alfvénic waves in coronal heating and the presence of turbulence in the quiet Sun corona. The project will leverage cutting-edge observational data from the recently commissioned Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) and the Upgraded Coronal Multi-channel Polarimeter (UCoMP).

The RiPSAW project aims to address two fundamental questions in solar physics:

  • How do high-frequency Alfvénic waves contribute to coronal heating?
  • Is turbulence present in the quiet Sun's corona?

To answer these questions, the project will involve the analysis of observational data, development of advanced data analysis techniques (including machine learning), and comparison with numerical models.

The start date of the project is from May 2025. The role is fixed term for 3 years.

Closing date for applications is 2nd December 2024.

ABOUT YOU

This position offers a unique opportunity to work on a cutting-edge research project using state-of-the-art observational facilities. The successful candidate will have the chance to make significant contributions to our understanding of the Sun's atmosphere and to develop valuable skills in data analysis and scientific communication. The candidate will be working with colleagues from around the globe, with opportunities to travel to research institutes, conferences and workshops within the UK and abroad. Further to this, there are options for the candidate to participate in broader training activities related to career development.

As well as joining the RiPSAW team, the successful candidate will join the Solar and Space Physics research group at Northumbria. We are now one of the largest groups in the UK with focus across the entire sun-Earth system (as well as other areas of the solar system). More information on the group can be found athttps://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/mathematics-physics-and-electrical-engineering/research/solar-and-space-physics/

Further information about the requirements of the role is available in theperson specification.
