Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence – UNSW. The Faculty of Engineering is offering an opportunity for a Research Associate. This role conducts independent and collaborative research to advance expertise in Cognitive Robotics and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning/Neuro-Symbolic Artificial Intelligence. The position supports scholarly research and professional activities nationally and internationally, including writing papers and reports for international journals, participating in conferences and workshops, and engaging with industry partners. This position reports to Professor Maurice Pagnucco, Deputy Dean (Education), Faculty of Engineering, and has no direct reports.

Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia. Employment type: Full-time, Fixed-term contract – 3 years. Salary: Level A – AUD $113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research to advance Cognitive Robotics and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning/Neuro-Symbolic AI.
  • Contribute to writing scientific papers and reports for international journals; participate in conferences and workshops; engage with industry partners.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and build effective relationships across disciplines.
  • Contribute to the academic and research profile of the Faculty of Engineering and UNSW.
Qualifications and Skills
  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in knowledge representation and reasoning (artificial intelligence) or neurosymbolic AI or related area.
  • Proven commitment to staying up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high-quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Understanding of UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, with familiarity of relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
