Ansys is looking for an R&D engineer to join our multiscale materials modelling team in the office of the CTO. The successful candidate will support the development of innovative software solutions within an innovative Horizon Europe project, collaborating with internal and external teams of researchers and developers. The project is an important part of our strategy to develop solutions for multiscale materials modelling, from atoms to continuum, and responsibilities include development of software solutions and applications to support the use of the Ansys Granta MI materials data management system in computational material science and materials informatics.

While primarily focusing on one project, the candidate will be involved in a limited number of other research projects in computational materials science, machine learning applied to materials, depending on the candidate interests and background.

This role will appeal to someone with a research background in computational materials science or engineering (or related fields such as computational chemistry chemical, mechanical engineering, physics) with a strong interest and some experience in software development. Other STEM backgrounds may be considered if the candidate demonstrates relevant experience in software development and machine learning.

The position is linked to the funded project and therefore initially limited to two years. The candidate must have the right to work and reside in UK, preferably Cambridge, for the duration of the contract.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Ansys participation in the collaborative research project
  • Work with the team and broader organization to translate project requirements into solution designs aligned with Ansys roadmaps.
  • Contribute to the improvements, development, and testing of a workflow system starting from existing developments.
  • Develop project deliverables, especially in the areas of integration, workflow and data analysis.
  • Present developments and progress in regular internal and external meetings
  • Support other projects and team members

Minimum Qualifications

  • A degree (MSc or PhD) in material science, an engineering discipline or a closely related subject.
  • Experience in developing web solutions using Python frameworks (Flask, Django, fastAPI, etc.), REST APIs design, and web application using python (Dash and Streamlit preferred) or angular frameworks
  • Experience with version-control system (git and github)
  • Experience and/or interest in machine learning
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Have an organized and self-motivated approach to work, with good time management skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines.

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in computational materials science or related discipline
  • Experience working on collaborative, funded R&D projects, such as Horizon Europe
  • Exposure to large-scale software projects in academia or industry.
  • Experience in developing/contributing to workflow systems.
  • Experience in atomistic/electronic modelling tools and software
  • Experience with some Ansys solvers and tools such as Granta MI, Workbench, optiSLang, pyAnsys, etc.
  • Formal coding training and/or professional experience
