Geospatial Data Engineer

The Company:

At Amber Labs, we are a cutting-edge UK and European technology consultancy that prioritises empowering autonomy, promoting experimentation, and facilitating rapid learning to provide exceptional value to our clients. Our company culture is centred around collaboration, where all colleagues, regardless of their role, work together to minimise risk and shorten delivery times. Our team consists of highly-skilled cross-functional consultants, analysts, and support staff.

We are seeking a skilled Geospatial Data Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain geospatial data systems, leveraging your expertise in Python, R, ESRI products, and related technologies to solve complex spatial challenges for our diverse client base. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful projects across industries such as urban planning, environmental management, logistics, and utilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Geospatial Data Development: Design and implement scalable geospatial data pipelines using Python, R, and SQL to manage, process, and analyze spatial datasets.
  • GIS Systems and Applications: Utilize ESRI products (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online) and open-source GIS tools to develop, maintain, and enhance geospatial applications, maps, and data visualizations for clients.
  • Data Integration: Collect and integrate geospatial data from multiple sources, including satellite imagery, GPS, remote sensing data, and IoT devices, ensuring high-quality, reliable datasets for analysis.
  • Spatial Data Analysis: Apply advanced geospatial algorithms and machine learning models to solve location-based problems, such as route optimization, spatial risk analysis, environmental monitoring, and asset management.
  • Collaboration with Clients: Work closely with clients to understand their spatial data needs, provide technical expertise, and deliver innovative geospatial solutions that align with business objectives.
  • Optimization & Automation: Optimize geospatial workflows and automate repetitive tasks through scripting and programming to improve operational efficiency.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Document data engineering processes, create clear technical reports, and present geospatial analysis findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Cloud-Based Solutions: Leverage cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) for deploying and managing large-scale geospatial data infrastructure, ensuring performance, scalability, and security.
  • Stay Current with GIS Technologies: Continuously research and implement the latest geospatial tools and technologies to enhance capabilities and support client projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Data Science, Computer Science, or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience in geospatial data engineering, GIS analysis, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in Python and R for geospatial data manipulation and analysis.
  • Strong experience with ESRI products (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online) and open-source tools such as QGIS or PostGIS.
  • Solid understanding of spatial databases, GIS concepts, and geospatial data formats (e.g., shapefiles, GeoJSON, KML).
  • Experience with data processing and visualization libraries such as GeoPandas, Shapely, Matplotlib, or Leaflet.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (Azure, AWS) and tools like Databricks is preferred.
  • Knowledge of web mapping frameworks and geospatial APIs is a plus.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex geospatial concepts to clients and team members.

Benefits:

  • Join a rapidly expanding start-up where personal growth is a part of our DNA.
  • Benefit from a flexible work environment focused on deliverable outcomes.
  • Receive private medical insurance through Aviva.
  • Enjoy the benefits of a company pension plan through Nest.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus UK bank holidays.
  • Access Perkbox, a global employee rewards platform offering discounts, perks, and wellness resources.
  • Participate in a generous employee referral program.
  • A highly collaborative and collegial environment with opportunities for career advancement.
  • Be encouraged to take bold steps and embrace a mindset of experimentation.
  • Choose your preferred device, PC or Mac.

Valuing the unique experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds of all employees and creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued.
