The Role

We are looking to hire an Energy Trading Director, based in London, with the ability to work from home, to join our team to take ownership of and drive forward:

  • our portfolio trading strategy,
  • set up internal trading desk and strategic relationship with partners (trading, offetakers etc),
  • set up and lead internal trading team,
  • for the largest battery storage portfolio in the UK which will also include the intra-trading of solar and wind generation, as well as integration on intermittent demand.
  • You and your team will be the market leaders in optimising and trading the largest electricity storage assets and portfolio in the country. There will be multiple BESS assets, each with a 4GWh capacity. You will be responsible for the creation of strategic agreements with route to marker players and the creation of our internal trading systems, supported by a best-in-class Team, leading us towards theInternet of Energy.
  • You will be the company’s go to expert on the UK energy trading market, keeping up to date on all aspects impacting pricing and government, statutory and counterparty policy and be responsible for revenue forecasting.
  • You will develop the route to market for our assets and oversee the development and integration of smart energy trading software. You will support the negotiation of PPAs and tolling agreements with sophisticated characteristics, linked to innovative ways for asset financing.

Key responsibilities:

The Energy Trading Director will grow and lead the Energy Market Analysis and Trading Team.

You will:

  • Set-up and manage our Energy Trading company to be ready for theInternet of Energy, with fast smart trading, shorter settlement periods, nodal pricing;
  • Set-up and lead the internal smart energy trading platform development, AI driven, multilayered and dynamic, with the support of our internal Digital Team;
  • Set-up and manage the contractual framework with trading partners, tolling agreements, PPA and off-take agreements, with the support of our internal legal team and best in class law firms, defining and delivering the commercial strategy;
  • Contribute to contract negotiations for supply, demand and tolling agreements across the portfolio;
  • Set-up market analysis tools based on our digital systems, able to predict trends, pricing and exchanges;
  • Manage the relationships with regulators, energy exchanges and markets, grid operators and governments, about energy trading, including authorisation, licences, guarantees etc.
  • Manage the trading margin of our trading company, with P&L responsibilities, and being a statutory director of our trading company
  • Develop the trading and hedging strategies for both individual assets and the portfolio;
  • Establish and manage the internal Trading Team and ensure asset trading optimisation across the generation and storage portfolio;
  • Further develop the internal Energy Market Analysis Team;
  • Exploit the use of mathematical programming techniques and machine learning to optimise different aspects of the storage, generation business, and demand-side optimisation;
  • Support the NatPower UK Development Director and Team in the strategic development of large scale storage and renewables projects across the UK, including utility scale battery storage, solar, onshore wind, with possible other technologies like tidal in the future;
  • Be directly responsible for all energy market analysis and contribute to the financial modelling of each project including updating the Board on changes in the UK energy market and advising on the likely energy market future outlook as a result of in-depth market analysis, including identification of future market opportunities.
  • Support our internal Financial Modelling Team in modelling revenues of the projects, creating sophisticated models based on hard data about energy trading, modelling scenarios for changes to specific assumptions, deriving the financial viability of projects from initial project appraisal all the way through to operations.
  • Support the NatPower UK Investment Director in engagements with third parties for asset and portfolio valuations.

What we are looking for:

  • a person with an actual track record in innovative trading:
  • Bachelor's and Master’s degree in a relevant field (business, finance, physics, mathematics, computer science etc);
  • A PhD in the above would be desirable;
  • Industry experience, a minimum of 10 years, possibly in the position of second in command in energy trading desks;
  • Deep knowledge of energy market and possibly financial market regulations, energy production and financial trading;
  • Deep understanding of trading practices and energy trading markets in the UK. Though UK market knowledge it essential, experience in more than one market will be preferential;
  • Strong knowledge of the main trading and exchange systems and regulations;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of news and research in the field, with specific understanding of algorithm and AI based fast trading, even applied to other commodities;
  • Experience with trading techniques and products, hedging strategies, financial optimisation and risk management;
  • Experience in PPA, off-take, tolling, rout-to-market, JV agreement sales and negotiations;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Leadership experience in leading traders and guide digital teams as internal client;
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
