Use data to accelerate the shift to a zero-carbon grid

Komodo Energy is looking for a Data Scientist to help us turn raw energy data into real-world impact through smart analysis, insight generation, and early optimisation models. We’re an early-stage climate tech startup developing intelligent software to manage and trade energy flexibility from devices like heat pumps and hot water tanks.

This is a foundational role. You’ll be our first data-focused hire, working closely with the CTO to shape how we collect, analyse, and use data from day one. If you’ve worked with energy data before—or explored it through a side project or home setup—you’ll feel right at home.

Why this role matters

Renewable energy is abundant—but only when the sun shines or the wind blows. To make clean electricity work for everyone, we need to match supply and demand more intelligently.

That’s where Komodo comes in: we help smart energy devices shift their usage in time, creating “flexibility” that supports the grid and saves customers money.

Behind the scenes, that requires a deep understanding of energy markets, customer behaviour, and the assets themselves. Your job will be to bring all of that data together—reliably, scalably, and with a clear path to real-time insight and decision-making.

What you’ll do

In the early months, you’ll help us integrate and explore our four core data sources:

Market data– prices, flexibility opportunities, and grid signals
Customer usage data– how people heat their homes, and when
Device data– from real heat pumps and smart energy assets
Manufacturer specs– technical constraints and capabilities

You’ll work hands-on with this data to uncover trends, test hypotheses, and build early versions of the models that will power Komodo’s decision engine. This includes:

  • Cleaning and transforming time-series and device data
  • Exploratory analysis to surface actionable insights
  • Building simple predictive or optimisation models to support operational decisions
  • Laying the groundwork for future machine learning and control logic

About you

You’re excited to use your data science skills to solve meaningful climate and energy problems. You don’t need to tick every box—but if this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

You might have experience working with energy data, real-world devices, or just a strong curiosity about how it all works. Maybe you've worked in the energy sector—or maybe you've built your own smart home setup and tracked energy usage over time.

You likely:

  • Have a mathematical mindset and enjoy figuring things out from the data up
  • Are comfortable working with messy, real-world data
  • Have worked with time-series or real-world performance data
  • Like turning analysis into action—whether that’s a script, a model, or a dashboard
  • Care about writing reliable, maintainable code with clear documentation
  • Are collaborative, curious, and eager to learn—especially in new domains

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with flexibility services, energy trading, or IoT energy assets
  • Familiarity with UK energy market dynamics (e.g. DNOs, ESO, time-of-use tariffs)

We encourage you to apply even if you’re not sure you meet every requirement—skills can be developed. We’re more interested in your mindset, curiosity, and enthusiasm for our mission.

What we offer

  • A clean slate– Build from scratch, with strong input into architecture and tooling
  • A real mission– Every line of code or analysis helps cut carbon and reduce bills
  • High trust– You’ll have ownership from day one, with the flexibility to shape your work
  • Growth– As we scale, you’ll help grow the team—and your role can grow with it

Our Culture

At Komodo Energy, we’re building a culture where everyone feels supported, valued, and able to thrive.

We simplify the complex, work with trusted stakeholders, and aim to make life easier for our customers and partners. We ask thoughtful questions, seek diverse perspectives, and work together with openness and integrity.

Our values include:

  • Diversity and inclusion– We welcome different experiences and ways of thinking
  • Sustainability– We make environmentally responsible decisions every day
  • Excellence and transparency– We do our best work, and communicate clearly
  • Teamwork and service– We support our customers, colleagues, and community
  • Perseverance– We stay resilient, even when the path is uncertain

We care about building a team that reflects the diversity of the people and communities we serve. If you’re excited by our mission but aren’t sure you ‘fit the mould,’ we’d still love to hear from you.

How to apply

If this sounds like your kind of challenge, we’d love to hear from you.
Apply using the form below—and if you have a moment, include a few lines about why this role excites you or a question you’d want to explore if you joined.

Negotiating Your AI Job Offer: Equity, Bonuses & Perks Explained

Artificial intelligence (AI) has proven itself to be one of the most transformative forces in today’s business world. From smart chatbots in customer service to predictive analytics in finance, AI technologies are reshaping how organisations operate and innovate. As the demand for AI professionals grows, so does the complexity of compensation packages. If you’re a mid‑senior AI professional, you’ve likely seen job offers that include far more than just a base salary—think equity, bonuses, and a range of perks designed to entice you into joining or staying with a company. For many, the focus remains squarely on salary. While that’s understandable—after all, your monthly take‑home pay is what covers day-to-day expenses—limiting your negotiations to salary alone can leave considerable value on the table. From stock options in ambitious startups to sign‑on bonuses that ‘buy you out’ of your current contract, modern AI job offers often include elements that can significantly boost your long-term wealth and job satisfaction. This article aims to shed light on the full scope of AI compensation—specifically focusing on how equity, bonuses, and perks can enhance (or sometimes detract from) the overall value of your package. We’ll delve into how these elements work in practice, what to watch out for, and how to navigate the negotiation process effectively. Our goal is to provide mid‑senior AI professionals with the insights and tools to land a holistic compensation deal that accurately reflects their technical expertise, leadership potential, and strategic importance in this fast-moving field. Whether you’re eyeing a leadership role in machine learning at an established tech giant, or you’re considering a pioneering position at a disruptive AI startup, the knowledge in this guide will help you weigh the merits of base salary alongside the potential riches—and risks—of equity, bonuses, and other benefits. By the end, you’ll have a clearer sense of how to align your compensation with both your immediate lifestyle needs and long-term career aspirations.
