Portas Consulting is the leading management consultancy dedicated to sport and physical activity. We work with clients globally including major international and national sporting bodies, professional sports clubs and leagues, and investors on their most critical and complex issues.

We are expanding our data science and analytics unit and are looking for a data scientist to join our team. As part of a fast-growing area, you will get the opportunity to make a big contribution to developing new models and to be a key voice in deciding which tools and frameworks we use going forwards. We are looking for someone proactive, excited by the opportunity of working in a growing team, and who loves sport.

Responsibilities:

  • Play a key role in developing new statistical models and core IP. This will include researching the most appropriate methodologies, assessing feasibility, training and testing different approaches, and deploying the resulting models.
  • Use advanced statistical models to add a deeper layer of insight to client projects, enhancing our existing research capabilities.
  • Develop standardised templates and frameworks to make common data analysis and visualisation tasks more efficient and scalable.
  • Coach more junior members of the team and help to develop their technical skills.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing, both within the analytics team and around the wider firm to demonstrate the growing capabilities of our new data science unit.

What we’re looking for:

  • Statistical modelling: knowledge of core regression and classification techniques, as well as a broader range of machine learning algorithms. You should have experience developing statistical models in an applied context and a good understanding of the model development process.
  • Tools: strong knowledge of Python or R (both is an advantage). Knowledge of relational database systems and writing SQL queries. Experience working with Microsoft Azure or other cloud platforms is an advantage.
  • Communication: strong communication skills and in particular the ability to communicate complex analytical concepts to non-experts.
  • Passion for sport and physical activity.
