Job Description

Data Scientist, Applied AI & Innovation, London, COR7462

Join a forward-thinking business that is investing in technology, data, and AI to shape the future of how it operates. We’re seeking a Data Scientist focused on applied AI & innovation to be the company’s first in-house technical hire.

If you’re an early career professional in Data / AI and looking for a role where you can genuinely influence direction, build new ideas, and work hands-on with modern AI and automation, this could be the opportunity for you!

The role:

As a Data Scientist, you’ll play a key role in identifying, shaping, and delivering new technical and AI-driven solutions across the business. This is a broad, hands-on role where you’ll assess existing processes, explore what’s possible with modern AI and automation tools, and prototype ideas that can deliver real commercial value.

You’ll work closely with non-technical stakeholders, translating business problems into technical solutions. While some coding and technical implementation is required, this is not a pure development role, it’s about applied problem-solving, experimentation, and selecting the right platforms, tools, or vendors to bring ideas to life.

The company:

You’ll be joining a well-established company that recognises the opportunity to do much more with data, technology, and AI. The Data Scientist will sit at the centre of the business, helping to shape new products, improve internal efficiency, and define the company’s technical direction.

The role is hybrid, requiring 3 days per week in the London office.

What’s required?

The ideal Data Scientist, Applied AI & Innovation will have some of the following:

A strong interest and genuine passion for AI, automation, and emerging technologies

A degree in a technical or analytical subject (Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, etc)

Prior experience in a technical, data, or analytical role, with hands-on technical ability (e.g. Python, data analysis, APIs, automation, or similar)

Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify opportunities and propose practical solutions

Confidence to work independently, communicate ideas clearly, and challenge or push back when needed

If you’re excited by applied AI, enjoy shaping ideas from concept to prototype, and want a role with real ownership, we’d love to hear from you.

What Hiring Managers Look for First in AI Job Applications (UK Guide)

Hiring managers do not start by reading your CV line-by-line. They scan for signals. The best applications make those signals obvious in the first 10–20 seconds. This guide breaks down what hiring managers typically look for first in AI applications in the UK market, how to present it on your CV, LinkedIn & portfolio, and the most common reasons strong candidates get overlooked. Use it as a checklist to tighten your application before you click apply.

The Skills Gap in AI Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Artificial intelligence is no longer a future concept. It is already reshaping how businesses operate, how decisions are made, and how entire industries compete. From finance and healthcare to retail, manufacturing, defence, and climate science, AI is embedded in critical systems across the UK economy. Yet despite unprecedented demand for AI talent, employers continue to report severe recruitment challenges. Vacancies remain open for months. Salaries rise year on year. Candidates with impressive academic credentials often fail technical interviews. At the heart of this disconnect lies a growing and uncomfortable truth: Universities are not fully preparing graduates for real-world AI jobs. This article explores the AI skills gap in depth—what is missing from many university programmes, why the gap persists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build a successful career in artificial intelligence.
