Senior Algorithms Engineer

Wokingham | £50,000 – £60,000 | Permanent | Hybrid

Our client is an established, leading design and manufacturing business with several sites across the UK, delivering cutting-edge products to the defence industry. They are seeking an innovative Senior Algorithms Engineer to join their Image Processing team, developing next-generation intelligent sensing and computer vision capabilities for challenging defence applications including electro-optic gun fire control systems, ground-based air defence, counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS), multi-domain surveillance, and autonomous platforms.

The Role

You'll solve complex real-world perception problems by combining machine learning, computer vision, signal processing, and statistical techniques to improve the ability of systems to detect, classify, track, and understand objects in challenging environments. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take technical ownership of key capability areas, helping shape future development activities while mentoring others and sharing expertise across the engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, develop, and evaluate computer vision algorithms for image classification, fine-grained recognition, and object detection
  • Investigate challenging technical problems through structured experiments and evidence-based approaches
  • Design and improve datasets, evaluation methodologies, and automated pipelines to accelerate ML development
  • Analyse model performance, identify failure modes, and develop innovative solutions to improve real-world capability
  • Develop tools and processes to improve automation, repeatability, and efficiency across the ML lifecycle
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers
  • Support integration, testing, and deployment of algorithms into real-time video processing systems
  • Produce technical documentation, reports, and presentations to support engineering decisions

What You'll Need

Essential:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, AI, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
  • Practical experience developing and deploying ML or computer vision algorithms in production or near-production systems
  • Experience with modern computer vision architectures, including object detection, image classification, and transformers
  • Ability to analyse image datasets using image processing techniques to inform model development and debugging
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to break down complex, uncertain problems
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts clearly
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in C++ for production or performance-critical systems

Desirable:

  • Experience with Bayesian inference, uncertainty estimation, probabilistic modelling, or state estimation
  • Familiarity with custom loss functions, action recognition, synthetic data, or multi-modal neural networks
  • ML development tools (experiment tracking, dataset management, model evaluation, CI/CD pipelines)
  • Experience using build systems such as CMake for cross-platform C++ development

What's on Offer

  • 37.5-hour week with lunchtime finishes on Fridays
  • Hybrid/flexible working
  • 28 days annual leave plus Christmas closure
  • Group pension (matched up to 5%), income protection, and life assurance
  • EAP, health/wellbeing initiatives, gym membership discounts, EV salary sacrifice scheme
  • Shares incentive plan, referral bonus scheme, and strong L&D support
  • Free onsite car parking across all locations

Please Note: Due to the nature of this business, successful candidates must be able to obtain UK Security Clearance, including proof of identity, employment history, and 5 years' UK residency.

What Is an AI Forward Deployed Engineer? The Fastest-Growing Job in AI for 2026

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
