We are recruiting for a Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Content Provenance to develop new AI-based technologies for rights, attribution and licensing in live music and digital media.

You will join the UKRI/AHRC-funded BRAID P3R project, working within the CoSTAR National Lab as part of a collaboration between the University of Surrey and Royal Holloway, University of London. The project will develop new technical approaches that enable performers, creators and rights holders to express and protect rights over their work and likeness as live performances are captured, transformed and distributed across digital platforms.

The research will build on Surrey’s world-leading work in content authenticity and media provenance. You will develop new Computer Vision, AI and multimedia technologies for identifying and representing rights associated with performers and creative works across images, video and audio. A particular focus will be the development of provenance-based licensing infrastructure that can associate rights and permissions with media and with the performers represented within it. This will include exploring techniques for determining the presence and likeness of performers within visual media, for example using biometric and privacy-preserving representations, and connecting these signals to provenance and licensing information using standards such as C2PA (Content Credentials).

A further strand of the project will explore audio watermarking for live performance, including robust watermarking of live audio streams and its integration with provenance and licensing frameworks. The research will contribute towards a technical framework and APIs that external companies can integrate with to prototype new services for rights-aware capture, distribution and reuse of live performance content.

You will join the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at the University of Surrey, a world-leading research centre in Computer Vision, AI and multimedia. Our team has a strong international track record in content provenance and authenticity research spanning computer vision, watermarking, machine learning, privacy-preserving technologies and open standards. We have contributed extensively to the development of the C2PA Content Credentials standard and worked closely with industry to translate provenance research into technologies used in real-world products and services.

The project is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. You will work with researchers at Surrey and Royal Holloway, the wider CoSTAR National Lab community, and industry partners who will help integrate and evaluate technologies developed through the project. The role provides an opportunity both to publish fundamental research in leading international venues and to translate that research into demonstrators, APIs and prototype systems with external partners.

The position will be based at the University of Surrey in Guildford, UK. The post is available for an immediate start and is for a duration of 12 months. Remote working is available with the expectation of at least 50% time spent in the office.
