AI Software Engineer

Rochdale | £65,000 - £70,000 + 25% Bonus + Benefits | Hybrid - 3 Days Office-Based

An exciting opportunity for an AI Software Engineer to join a large, established organisation with a £180m turnover and 7,500 employees, as the first dedicated employee in a new AI team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to help shape the organisation's approach to AI and automation, building the foundations, infrastructure and applications needed to transform business processes. The company is fully embracing AI, and this role offers the chance to make a real impact from day one, taking ownership of solutions from initial concept through to deployment.

The Role

Working closely with the Director of Data and Business Optimisation, the AI Software Engineer will design, build and deploy AI-powered applications, agents and integrations to improve efficiency across finance, billing, field operations and customer service.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Establishing the infrastructure, development processes and deployment frameworks required to deliver AI applications securely and effectively.
  • Developing AI-powered applications, agents, APIs and integrations using modern programming languages and large language models.
  • Integrating AI solutions with Microsoft 365, finance, CRM, workforce management and other business systems.
  • Building data pipelines and reporting services to provide reliable, consistent business information.
  • Implementing effective AI governance, security, testing and monitoring to ensure solutions are reliable, compliant and fit for purpose.
  • Working with stakeholders across the business to identify opportunities for automation, challenge existing processes and turn business problems into practical technical solutions.
  • Taking ownership of the full software development lifecycle, from design and development through to deployment, maintenance and ongoing improvement.
  • Measuring the business benefits of AI solutions, including time saved, reduced errors and cost efficiencies.
  • Supporting the development of the wider team as it grows, sharing best practice and advising on emerging AI technologies.

About You

You will be an experienced Software Engineer with hands-on experience developing and deploying production applications, alongside practical experience integrating AI and large language models into business solutions.

You will ideally have:

  • Strong commercial software development experience using TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, C# or a similar modern language.
  • Experience integrating LLM APIs into applications, including prompt engineering, tool/function calling and evaluating AI outputs.
  • A solid understanding of web applications, REST APIs, relational databases and cloud or serverless deployment.
  • Experience with Git, automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
  • A good understanding of software security, data protection and the responsible use of AI.
  • The ability to understand business processes, identify opportunities for improvement and explain technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach, with the confidence to take ownership and build solutions from the ground up.

The Opportunity

This is much more than a traditional software development role. As the first employee in a new team, you will have the opportunity to help establish the technical foundations, shape how AI is adopted across the organisation and deliver solutions that make a tangible difference to the way the business operates.

Package: £65,000 - £70,000 + 25% bonus, private medical insurance and pension.

Location: Rochdale, with three days per week in the office.

If you are passionate about AI, software engineering and automation, and want the opportunity to build something from the ground up within a substantial, forward-thinking business, this could be an excellent next step.

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
