Technical Graduate Opportunity starting in October 2025

We’re making great strides towards achieving our ambition of becoming the UK’s best digital bank.  Our Graduate programme is at the heart of our digital strategy and you`ll have opportunity to join one of our teams across our Chief Operating Office who have a crucial role in driving our digital transformation. You`ll be working with the latest technology to offer solutions that drive better customer experiences.

Have we got your attention? Let’s tell you some bit more about our Technical Graduate Opportunity. You’ll gain hands on experience and knowledge across technology and we’ll invest in you and your training, so you’ll have the technical skills you need to help you achieve your long-term career aspirations.

Our programme is rotational and we`ll look to move you every 6 months over the two-year programme to give you a deeper understanding of our technology landscape. You`ll have the opportunity to try new things to help you discover both your passions and equally the things you less enjoy, helping you find the right career choice for you.

Our placements will span across various areas of Chief Operating Office including Digital Software Development, Object orientated programming (Java), Architecture and Design, Data Engineering, Data Science, Data Insights, Software Maintenance, Quality Engineering/Automated Testing and Information Security.

The work will vary depending on what team you are, but this will give you a flavour of what to expect:

• Work in an agile way, collaborating with technical and non-technical teams to drive our digital aspirations
• Working closely with experienced technology professionals on a mix of projects and interesting change initiatives that drive our strategic direction
• Interpreting requirements and contributing ideas to create efficient, innovative, and highly functional solutions for customers
• Assisting on design and development of new features and ways of working
• Helping to build, design, test and deliver high quality solutions in line with guidance and best practices
• Learning new technologies and augmenting your skills to keep abreast of new developments
• Contributing to the overall evolution of digital best practice within Virgin Money
• Writing and reviewing clear and concise technical documentation to support your work

We need you to have

• 2:2 degree or above ideally in an IT or Data related subject from any university; PhD and Masters students are also welcome
• Due to the technical nature of this programme, you’ll need a good understanding of at least one modern programming language or framework, a love of technology and a strong desire to learn.
• A passion for technology and problem solving and an excitement to immerse  yourself in a fun, fast moving and challenging environment
• A growth mind-set with a strong desire to learn and grow your career
• A rigorous, methodical approach with excellent attention to detail
• Tenacity, demonstrating an ability to continually learn from your successes and failures
• A great attitude and sense of ambition – be motivated with an appetite for success
• Ability to build productive working relationships and be a credible team player
• Most importantly we need you to be passionate about being involved at the heart of our business, with one eye on what we’re delivering today and the other on the future planning for the bank

Points to note…

There will be a 2-stage selection process.

The first part is an application form and video selfie. You’ll see all the questions on the application form and we also want you to send us a short video selfie telling us why you’d make a brilliant Technical Graduate at Virgin Money. All the details for this are on the application form.

The second and final stage will be an Assessment Centre, held in our Gosforth or Glasgow Hub mid February in early 2025.

This role will be a mixture of office based as well as working from home, and we’ll work with you to find a rhythm and routine that works best. We will of course, make sure you have the IT equipment to access our systems and to interact digitally with your new team and colleagues, but we thought it best to let you know this in advance, so you can make sure you are set up to work safely and productively. If you have any questions on this let us know!

Why the UK Could Be the World’s Next AI Jobs Hub

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly moved from research labs into boardrooms, classrooms, hospitals, and homes. It is already reshaping economies and transforming industries at a scale comparable to the industrial revolution or the rise of the internet. Around the world, countries are competing fiercely to lead in AI innovation and reap its economic, social, and strategic benefits. The United Kingdom is uniquely positioned in this race. With a rich heritage in computing, world-class universities, forward-thinking government policy, and a growing ecosystem of startups and enterprises, the UK has many of the elements needed to become the world’s next AI hub. Yet competition is intense, particularly from the United States and China. Success will depend on how effectively the UK can scale its strengths, close its gaps, and seize opportunities in the years ahead. This article explores why the UK could be the world’s next global hub for artificial intelligence, what challenges it must overcome, and what this means for businesses, researchers, and job seekers.
