The shift pattern for this position is Monday – Friday 0900-1700 (shift TBC), the service also covers Saturday mornings and Public holidays (0800-1200).

An exciting opportunity has opened for a Team Leader to Supervise the Andrology section of the Cytopathology department at NHSGG&C.

The Pathology Department NHSGG&C provides a full and comprehensive Histopathology and Cytopathology service to the population of Glasgow & Clyde, hospital based users, users in Primary Care and General Practice; customers in the private sector, and to colleagues in university and other teaching establishments. The Department is also a tertiary referral centre and National referral centre.

The centralised Pathology Department within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GGC) is located within a purpose built laboratory at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH). The department is the largest of its kind within the UK with a staff of circa 45wte consultants, 25 trainee medical staff and circa 215 non-medical staff. The workload comprises in excess of 100,000 histopathology surgical requests p.a., up to 215,000 HPV & 90,000 LBC cervical screening requests p.a. and more that 20,000 non gynaecological cytopathology (including semenology) investigations. The total budget for 2022/23 is circa £23.5 million.

Main duties of the post include;

Supervise and coordinate the day to day technical activities of the Andrology section within the laboratory. Provide the advanced scientific and technical skills to process and deliver patient material in a suitable form for screening and or diagnostic purposes as an aid to effective diagnosis and treatment. Undertake routine and complex laboratory work within the Andrology subdivision of the laboratory ensuring the work is performed in an efficient, organised and professional manner to provide a high quality, timely service. Assist the Cytology Specialty Manager in troubleshooting methods and/or processes and/or in defining and developing optimum methods. Work independently and/or with other staff to deliver the Andrology service to the standards set. Provide interpretative advice regarding specialist techniques to other laboratory professional groups Leads a team of staff within the Andrology subdivision of the department and monitors the performance of their team. Train and mentor more junior members of staff as required.

Essential requirements of the post;

Accredited Degree in Biomedical Science HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist Successful attainment of relevant specialist diploma, or equivalent knowledge and experience Master’s degree (MSc) in Biomedical Science, or equivalent level of knowledge Highly developed specialist knowledge and expertise of Cytology/Andrology including discipline specific specialised procedures. Evidence of ongoing continuous professional development (CPD). Computer literate with good IT skills including in-depth knowledge of equipment software, quality control packages, word processing and statistical or data analysis packages. Will have knowledge of departmental policies and protocols and all relevant mandatory and statutory Codes of Practice Possess problem-solving, organizational, communication, teamwork and leadership skills. Ability to motivate staff within/outside their direct team and encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. Willingness and ability to learn new skills and technologies Ability to prioritise and work to strict deadlines.

Supervisory and management experience is desirable.

Core working hours are 09:00-17:00 Monday-Friday, with rotational out of hours shifts on Saturdays/Public Holidays 08:00-12:00.
