About Yottar

Yottar is a startup on a mission to accelerate the transition to net-zero electricity through data science and good data engineering.

Yottar is building a digital twin of electricity grids and applying machine learning to optimise the siting and design of energy assets. We are highly focussed on a critical bottleneck to the transition to net zero electricity - helping clean energy asset developers understand how and where they can connect to the electricity networks. Grid congestion has emerged as the single biggest bottleneck to the development of zero emission energy systems and all energy asset developers from solar farm developers, battery storage, EV charging and commercial and industrial demand developers, are struggling to get grid connections that don’t require expensive upgrades resulting in lengthy project delays.

Our platform will provide optimised recommendations for energy asset developers on where they should site, and how they should design assets according to what is possible on the grid.

About the role

We are looking for a full stack Senior Software Engineer to take ownership of delivering core elements of the Yottar platform, to coordinate with data scientists and sector experts and help solve one of the biggest challenges in the energy sector. This person will lead the development of key features of the Yottar platform such as the development of a marketplace for grid connections, and core optimisation features.

Team

You will join a foundational team focussed on rapidly building and scaling Yottar. You will play a leading role in designing and shaping the platform and team. Our approach is to ship fast, build iteratively, and talk to current and prospective users as much as possible.

Qualifications and skills:

  • At least 5+ years of full stack experience:
  • Very strong backend engineering skills - Python is a must-have, and experience with Node is a bonus. We look for a willingness to learn other technologies on the job.
  • A pragmatic approach to writing well-tested, maintainable code
  • Experience with frontend frameworks like React and Next.js, and TypeScript
  • Knowledge of SQL databases, including Postgres and PostGIS

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in CI/CD practices, with experience deploying and operating continuously deployed applications in production
  • Experience with Docker, Google Cloud, Terraform and other cloud-native tooling

Benefits:

  • Share options: We offer attractive share options to our employees.
  • 25 days of paid time off, plus UK bank holidays.
  • Paid maternity, paternity, adoption, or shared parental leave.
  • Personal learning budget of up to £500 a year, plus further role-specific training budget.
  • Up to 4% pension matching.

Equal Opportunities

Yottar is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.

Values

Yottar is a values-led company. We hold the following values as being especially important in delivering our mission:

  • Impact and speed:We are in a climate crisis. We need to be highly focussed on work that can have the most impact. This means thinking big, being focussed and shipping rapidly.
  • Think differently:We need to innovate in order to accelerate the transition to net zero. We need to be continuously seeking new and better ways of doing things.
  • Obsessive user focus:Impact comes from listening carefully to those experiencing the challenges we are seeking to address, and rapidly building solutions to help them.
  • Kindness:How we do things intrinsically impacts the outcome of our work. We seek to create an internal culture and external reach based on collaboration, inclusivity and kindness.
