Job Description
At Genomics England, the systems we run to sequence and store genomic data require cutting edge high-performance computing (HPC) solutions such as NVIDIA DGX for Machine Learning and FPGAs. Our hybrid compute platform supports the groundbreaking research and clinical applications we provide. As a Senior Product Manager, you’ll be the facilitator of the suite of HPC platform products we offer.

This is an opportunity for you to join us to combine your technical, communication, leadership, problem-framing, and problem-solving skills to take responsibility for the HPC products that will directly impact the advancement of genomic medicine. As the Senior Product Manager, you will be responsible for HPC products throughout their lifecycle. You will work with service owners, other product managers across GEL products, and engineers to understand hosting and compute requirements and develop roadmaps for viable solutions. You’ll interact with HPC solution providers including AWS to identify viable solutions and lead your squad to deliver your roadmap.

Your role will be pivotal in shaping the direction of multiple complex products, balancing technical excellence with strong business acumen. Please note this role is based on a 12 month fixed term contract.

Everyday responsibilities include:

  1. Understand the key market, competitive, technical, ethical, clinical implications to lead the product effectively.
  2. Rely on technical knowledge and skills to prioritise and manage your squad's area of the product.
  3. Ensure your users are happy, supported, and getting value from your area of the product. Ensure your product maintains compliance.
  4. Define product vision and strategy. Set squad OKRs aligned to business priorities.
  5. Translate the vision, strategy and OKRs into a roadmap for your area of the product and communicate it effectively.
  6. Manage successful outcomes through OKRs for users and the business by defining and prioritising the focus of the squad, balancing maintenance and new development using continuous discovery and delivery.
  7. Solve problems and make decisions quickly and effectively to make rapid progress, including many perspectives in problem solving and incorporating data into all decision making.
  8. Work in alignment with squad members, internal and external stakeholders, users, and third parties. Communicate priorities, commitments, and manage stakeholders.

Skills and experience for success:
Essential:

  1. Experience of leading a team, including ability to mentor, coach and create a collaborative environment.
  2. Experience managing complex technical backend products and the ability to engage deeply with engineering teams.
  3. Successful at (and enjoy) collaborating with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  4. Able to influence a range of stakeholders at a variety of seniorities but also willing to listen and take on board other opinions and ideas.
  5. Highly proactive and a practical problem solver who likes to figure stuff out rather than explaining why it can't be done.
  6. Experience with agile development/delivery of digital services.
  7. Experience taking a complex software product from discovery to sunset.
  8. Strong technical background with the ability to use technical language and high-performance computing concepts to conduct user research and gather technical requirements. Proven experience in translating technology products into business outcomes, effectively bridging the gap between technical solutions and business needs.

Preferred:

  1. Working experience with HPC computing, HPC architectures, cloud computing, and scalable technologies.
  2. Experience managing complex technical products and the ability to engage deeply with engineering teams.
  3. Experience in transforming teams from a solution-focused to an outcome and problem focused mindset.
  4. Experience creating business cases and ROI analyses to support strategic product decisions.
  5. Experience balancing technical requirements with business and user needs to deliver successful products.
  6. Strong communication skills, capable of articulating complex ideas clearly and effectively.
  7. Experience with big data technologies, AWS cloud and/or on-prem solutions.

Qualifications:
Degree or experience in Bachelor's degree or Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
