Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position focused on the development of advanced control algorithms to promote energy efficiency and occupant comfort during the vehicles operation and on the modelling and simulation of electric vehicles and their components.

About the Role

The post is part of the High-Scape Horizon Europe project, which focuses on exploring the feasibility of a family of highly efficient power electronics components and systems, including integrated traction inverters, electric drives and chassis actuators. Thanks to the presence in the consortium of industrial partners as well as Universities from all around Europe the project will be able to test its proposed solutions on two full size battery electric vehicle prototypes.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in experimental testing, programming (MATLAB/SIMULINK) and control, and should have a PhD in a relevant discipline such as mechanical, automotive or electrical/electronic engineering. Also, experience in the following areas is highly desirable:

•Vehicle dynamics control

•Control development and implementation, including neural networks

•Instrumentation and data-logging

•Digital twins

•Real-time rapid control prototyping systems (e.g., dSPACE)

Working under the leadership of Dr Davide Tavernini, Dr Umberto Montanaro and Prof Patrick Gruber, you will be responsible for the day-to-day research tasks in accordance with the project plan. This will include: i) Developing and implementing advanced control algorithms for electric powertrains and chassis actuators to enhance vehicle performance, energy management and comfort; i1) Supporting advanced simulations and modelling of electric powertrains to optimise efficiency and performance; iii) Collaborating with a team of experts in various fields, including electrical/electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science; iv) Participating in project meetings, presenting research findings, and contributing to project reports and publications.

Join our dynamic and inclusive team at the Centre for Automotive Engineering within the School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences. We actively seek applicants from all backgrounds, valuing the unique perspectives they bring to our research, which, in turn, leads to innovative solutions. We are dedicated to creating an environment where everyone is not only welcomed but also valued, respected, and supported.

Our Centre specializes in cutting-edge research areas, with a particular focus on vehicle dynamics and the control of autonomous systems. Initial contract for the Research Fellow position is set for a duration of 15 months, with extensions subject to thorough performance assessments, availability of project funding, and specific project requirements.

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing education and research. We are ambitious and have a bold vision of what we want to achieve - shaping ourselves into one of the best universities in the world, which we are achieving through the talents and endeavour of every employee.
