Join to apply for the Professor in Machine Learning and AI role at University of Surrey. The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering is seeking to recruit a Professor in Machine Learning and AI with a focus on Large Machine Learning Models to expand our dynamic team of internationally recognised AI researchers. This is part of a strategic investment of 6 posts across the School in AI, Cyber Security and Satellite Communications, which also incorporates a Lectureship to support this position.

Research environment

Surrey has an established international reputation in AI research. The School hosts two established research centres, the Computer Science Research Centre (CSRC) and the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP). The post is aligned to the Nature Inspired Computer and Engineering group within Computer Science. The Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI (PAI) brings together leading AI research with cross-disciplinary expertise and leads a portfolio of grant awards and doctoral training programmes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver high-impact research in AI and Machine Learning, with emphasis on Large Machine Learning Models; secure external funding; supervise and mentor research teams; contribute to teaching and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrate wide knowledge of the AI field and, ideally, experience of working with industry.
  • Engage in current School research areas including Natural Language Processing, Optimisation, Audio and Vision, AI for Health and Medical Applications, Robotics, and Security.
  • Contribute to Undergraduate and Masters programmes and to training within Doctoral Training Centres (CDTs).
  • Provide inclusive leadership as a senior leader; grow and support research teams to achieve excellence; champion strategic partnerships and contribute at a senior level to university service.
  • Drive a strategic research direction within the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI (PAI) and align colleagues within CSRC.
  • With the postholder, the School will appoint a Lecturer to support the research direction and strategy.
  • Be part of a supportive community with opportunities for collaboration across the School and University, including access to family-friendly benefits and facilities.

Qualifications

  • Wide knowledge of the AI field; ideally with experience of working with industry.
  • Proven record of internationally recognised research contributions and leadership of significant research programmes in AI and Machine Learning.
  • Experience of leading research teams and developing impactful collaborations.

Teaching and impact

AI features in the School's UG and MSc curricula as well as training within CDTs; the postholder would be expected to contribute to these activities and undertake other teaching duties across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
