Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement Coordinator (Data Science)

The Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) together with its academic partner The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) form the only specialist cancer NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) that supports translational clinical research into cancer diagnosis and treatment. The BRC goal is to increase cancer cure rates with smarter, kinder treatments which significantly reduce immediate and long‑term side effects.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Patient & Public Involvement and Engagement (PPI/E) Coordinator in clinical research. The vision of our BRC & CRF Strategy for Involving and Engaging People in Cancer Research | TRM CancerBRC (2022‑27) is to ensure that diverse public and patient voices are heard in all we do; in contributing to translational research, leading to the best cancer treatment alongside outstanding patient experiences. This role will facilitate patient and public involvement and engagement in these ambitious programmes of work. The ideal candidate will have professional experience of patient, public and community involvement and engagement in a research setting and of communicating with diverse members of the public. A working knowledge of the benefits, issues and initiatives related to PPI/E in research is essential.

Patients, their carers, and families are at the heart of everything we do. Working with, engaging and involving them is essential to continue improving the quality of care we provide and the research we conduct as a world leading cancer services and research provider (RM/ICR PPI/E Policy (2160)). The vision of the NHIR BRC & CRF Strategy for Involving and Engaging People in Cancer Research | TRM CancerBRC is to ensure that diverse public and patient voices from all backgrounds are heard in everything we do; in contributing to translational research, leading to the best cancer treatment alongside outstanding patient experiences.

This role will facilitate implementation of the above vision and in particular supporting Data Science and including the Integrated Discovery & Diagnostics (IDD) programme. Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that combines statistics, computer science, and domain expertise to extract meaningful insights from data. In healthcare, this means analysing large and complex datasets — such as electronic health records, genetic information, and clinical trial results — to identify patterns, predict outcomes, and improve patient care. By applying machine learning algorithms and statistical models, data science can help detect disease earlier, personalise treatments, and optimise healthcare delivery.

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a world‑leading cancer centre. Our role is to offer our patients the best cancer care available anywhere in the world, and to continue to make a global contribution to finding better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer. We employ over 4,500 staff in a diverse range of careers including nursing, medical, science, radiography, pharmacy, occupational therapy, finance and administrative services.
