NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. This is a fulltime, permanent post of 37 hours per week, with a shift pattern of Monday to Friday (8.30am-16.30pm).
This role is for an Orthotic Technician within the NHSGGC Orthotics Team.
The Orthotic service provides treatment for a diverse range of medical conditions and patients. This includes assessment for, and prescription of, appropriate Orthotic devices. Orthotic devices are body worn devices which can also be called braces or splints.
The Orthotic service is responsible for the delivery of outpatient and inpatient Orthotic care to all adults and some children and young people living in the NHSGGC area. We provide clinics on 8 acute sites and to other outlying units on demand, however this role is based only at Gartnavel General hospital with no travel required elsewhere.
The service receives around 16,000 new referrals each year and has a staff of 39 which include Orthotists, Orthotic Clinical Assistants, Orthotic Technical Assistants, Orthotic Administrators and an Orthotic Clinical Lead/Manager.
The Orthotic Technician is required to manufacture a range of Orthoses supplied to patients by the Orthotic department. They also work in the clinical environment to provide technical support to patients who need waiting repairs of their devices.
We are a digitally enabled service and our Orthotic workshop pioneers the use of CAD CAM technology in the manufacture of insoles. The Orthotic Technician would spend most of the time using our CAD CAM systems for manufacture. We have 2 computer numerical control (CNC) milling machines which our technical team control to manufacture insoles for our patients.
Other duties include:
Simple metal working techniques, including ‘cold’ shaping, riveting, drilling, and cutting of aluminium and stainless steel. Working with a range of materials used in orthotic manufacture and activities such as cutting, skiving, shaping, sewing and bonding using a range of adhesives and hand tools.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB:
Theoretical and appropriate practical knowledge and experience of materials and production techniques, use of equipment and tools.
These can be acquired through training or experience.
This may be for example;
Technical experience in manufacturing or light engineering or similar activity Apprenticeship, in house training or NVQ/SVQ in related areas or equivalent to SCQF level 3
Specific areas of knowledge skill and experience required for this post:
Basic manufacturing skills which good sensory, hand-eye co-ordination
Knowledge, experience and competency in the use of materials, systems, machinery, safety health and wellbeing practices and manufacturing procedures
Competent in the use of basic hands tools and manufacturing equipment Knowledge on how to use the paromed CAD CAM system (computer-aided-design, computer-aided-manufacture) for the input of scans and manufacture of insoles (training and support will be supplied on the job)
Quality control knowledge is required to be able to assess whether a finished orthosis meets the required quality standard to be passed to the patient. General Knowledge of IT equipment and Microsoft software packages · Effective communication skills Effective organiser and time manager
The Orthotic service is committed to continuing professional development and the post holder will be supported via in house or external training to learn all knowledge and skills required to carry out this role.
