Job title:Principal Mechanical Engineer – Marine Engineering


Location:Portsmouth – Onsite only


Salary:Up to 58,500 (dependent on skills and experience)



What you’ll be doing:




  • Providing oversight and assurance on behalf of the MOD customer for Warship Maintenance and upgrades Through-life




  • Assists in the production of estimates, creates and/or assists in the production of design requirement specifications




  • Undertake functional design and/or provide qualification and evidence for acceptance, fitness for purpose, legislative requirements, and safety




  • Develops, promotes and shares new technologies for implementation across businesses and programme(s)




  • Acts as an engineering, technical or design authority for a sub-system




  • Provides technical leadership and guidance on matters relating to a discipline, may occasionally lead a team of engineers including line management responsibility




Your skills and experiences:




  • Experienced professional engineer, with sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge and willingness to work towards Chartership




  • Knowledge, understanding and experience in a wide range of Mechanical engineering activities




  • sufficient breadth of technical knowledge/experience to make sound engineering decisions in all technical areas and shall seek support from specialist engineers where necessary




  • Experience in any of the following systems: Auxiliary systems including, HVAC, Fuel Systems, Gas Turbine Services, Fresh Water Services, Sea Water Services, Black and Grey Water Systems, Bilge and Sullage Systems, Gas Systems, Intake and Exhaust Systems, Chilled Water Systems, Lube Oil and Hydraulics




  • Safety, including being able to provide demonstrable experience of taking responsibility for safety decisions using sound safety management processes/tools

The Warship Technical Authority team:


Under the UK MoD Common Support Model (CSM), complex Warship Design Authority is comprised of the DE&S Warship Approving Authority (WAA) and the BAES Warship Technical Authority (WTA). This exciting role forms part of the T45 WTA and provides governance and oversight of Engineering decisions that primarily affect the T45 platform. In certain situations, this may extend to wider WTA supported platforms as the business requirements develop


The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure the design intent and safety of the T45 platform. It also involves collating and presenting assurance evidence to the corresponding WAA. The role operates under the definitive engineering authority of the T45 WTA Class Lead Engineer (CLE), ensuring that all decisions and outputs align with the required standards and governance
