, seeks a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Reader in Data-Driven Characterisation of Materials to join the Department of Materials within the Faculty of Engineering.

We are Imperial – a world-leading university for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business (STEMB), where scientific imagination leads to world-changing impact.

You will be expected to plan, direct and undertake the implementation of research activities and programmes of outstanding quality, international repute and innovation in the area of data-driven materials characterisation. This role focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) or comparable methods to transform the analysis of the large datasets produced by cutting-edge characterisation techniques both available within the department and at national facilities, and may include elements of automation and self-driving workflows, along with integration with other characterisation techniques to provide a multiscale, multiprobe view of advanced materials. We welcome applicants with expertise in AI-driven data interpretation and autonomous experimental strategies across all materials characterisation methods available in the Department.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong track record of research in the relevant discipline. They will be expected to generate income from external sources to support their own research programme and to develop collaborative programmes with other academics within the Department, across other research centres and institutes across the College and other departments within the College. They will be expected to advance the reputation of the Department and the College by disseminating their research through publications in international peer-reviewed journals and presentations to relevant audiences including at international conferences.

You will be capable of contributing to the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes and expected to teach and assess across a wide spectrum of its lecture courses. They will be required to prepare and deliver lectures and other classes to groups of typically 20 to 150 students in any one of the four years of the undergraduate course or the MSc courses. In addition, because the Department’s teaching places great emphasis on project-based work, the appointee will be involved in the supervision and assessment of laboratory classes, group exercises and research projects.
