Job Description

Lead Machine Learning Engineer

Location: London (5 days a week with some hybrid flexibility)

Salary: £110,000-£125,000 + equity (discussed post probation)

A London-based deep tech startup is hiring a Lead Machine Learning Engineer to drive its next stage of growth. The company is building cutting-edge tools that blend machine learning, 3D rendering, and real-world material capture — powering new ways for digital artists and creators to produce ultra-realistic virtual content at scale.

Backed by proprietary technology and traction in industries such as VFX and gaming, the company is now looking for a technical leader who can set strategic direction, oversee ML and software teams, and help turn state-of-the-art research into production-ready tools.

The Role

You’ll guide a team of 3 ML engineers working at the frontier of computer vision, graphics, and material understanding. This is a strategic leadership position, with scope to influence roadmap planning and technical direction, while also diving into hands-on problem solving when needed.

You will:

  • Define and execute the ML strategy in line with broader company goals
  • Collaborate closely with leadership on product and technical roadmaps
  • Prioritise high-impact ML problems and guide the team in solving them
  • Provide technical oversight across models, pipelines, and tooling
  • Mentor engineers, helping them scale ideas into unified systems
  • Ensure seamless collaboration between ML, software, and product teams

    What we’re looking for

  • Proven experience leading ML teams, ideally in a startup or fast-moving environment
  • Strong understanding of applied machine learning in 3D, VFX, graphics, or gaming domains
  • Ability to evaluate, prioritise, and deliver ML projects that drive product value
  • Comfort balancing hands-off technical strategy with occasional deep technical dives
  • Strong communication and team leadership skills
  • Bonus: experience building ML infrastructure or tooling to support scale

    Why Join

  • Work on unique problems in 3D content creation, with proprietary data and tooling
  • Lead the team building the next generation of material-aware, ML-driven graphics tech
  • Collaborate with domain experts in visual effects, photorealism, and production pipelines
  • Shape a category-defining product used by creatives and technical artists worldwide
