We do this by building products that combine expertise across the humanities and sciences, bringing together data, AI, and domain expertise. As we are entering an exciting phase of growth, we are looking for a Head of Artificial Intelligence to build and drive our AI strategy and roadmap.

We do this by building products that combine expertise across the humanities and sciences, bringing together data, AI, and domain expertise. As we are entering an exciting phase of growth, we are looking for a Head of Artificial Intelligence to build and drive our AI strategy and roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define the AI vision and technical strategy that underpins our product roadmap.
  • Build, coach, and inspire a growing team of ML engineers and researchers creating a culture of excellence, pragmatism, and rapid iteration.
  • Own the end‑to‑end lifecycle of LLM‑powered features: data curation, model selection or training, evaluation, deployment, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Software Engineering, and Data teams to embed AI capabilities into user‑facing workflows.
  • Establish best practices for model governance, experimentation, observability, and cost/performance optimisation across GPU/TPU and CPU inference stacks.
  • Stay on top of the fast‑moving AI research landscape, assessing new techniques and partnering with external vendors or academia where it accelerates our mission.
  • This is primarily a technical individual contributor role with some line management scope, supporting the growth and performance of two direct reports.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • 10+years of experience in machine‑learning engineering and applied research, with at least 4years leading high‑performing AI teams.
  • Deep expertise in large language models (LLMs), NLP, and transformer architectures hands‑on with fine‑tuning, RAG, context engineering, and safety alignment.
  • Proven track‑record shipping AI/ML systems from 0→1 and scaling them in production at start‑up environments.
  • Strong Python engineering skills and familiarity with modern ML tooling (PyTorch, JAX, Vector Databases, MLOps platforms).
  • Able to translate business problems into AI roadmaps and communicate clearly with engineers, data scientists, and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • A strategic thinker who thrives in ambiguity, balances research rigour with product velocity, and is passionate about ExTrac’s mission.
