Join our cross-functional team working at the intersection of neuroscience, robotics, and AI, where your work will drive breakthroughs in brain research.Job Overview As an Embedded Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for developing custom firmware and hardware interfaces for high-precision neural recording equipment. Youll collaborate closely with experts across neuroscience, robotics, and data science, delivering solutions that support cutting-edge research on brain function.Key Responsibilities - Firmware Development: Design and implement firmware for embedded neural recording systems using C/C++ for ARM Cortex microcontrollers. - Hardware Integration: Interface with sensors and recording devices through low-level protocols (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART) to ensure accurate and reliable data capture.- System Miniaturization: Create compact, low-power solutions for miniaturized devices tailored for neural data acquisition. We are particularly interested in this chip set: neuropixels.org/specialty-products- Design and Testing: Build, test, and optimize embedded systems to meet high precision and performance standards for neural data acquisition.- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work alongside neuroscientists and AI specialists to integrate embedded systems into larger experimental platforms.Required Skills & Experience - Degree: Bachelors or Masters in Electronics, Embedded Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field. - Experience: Minimum of 3 years in embedded systems development, with a strong focus on firmware design for real-time applications.- Coding Proficiency: Advanced skills in Embedded C and C++, with Python for testing and automation.- Microcontroller Experience: Extensive experience with ARM Cortex microcontrollers, specifically ARM Cortex-M series, and Nordic series, familiarity with NXP or ST microcontrollers is preferred.- Hardware Interface Protocols: Strong knowledge of SPI, I2C, UART, and experience developing low-level drivers for these interfaces.- PCB Design: Proficiency in PCB design tools such as Altium Designer or Cadence; experience with PCB miniaturization is highly desirable.- Low-Power Design: Proven experience designing low-power embedded systems for portable applications.- Real-Time OS (RTOS): Experience with RTOS for resource-constrained systems is a plus.- Digital Signal Processing (DSP): Knowledge in DSP and neural signal processing is a strong asset.- Debugging and Optimization: Proficiency in debugging embedded hardware-software integration issues and optimizing system performance.- Project Management: Familiarity with Agile development processes and version control (e.g., Git).Desirable Skills - Experience with high-precision sensor integration in embedded systems - Knowledge of FPGA or ASIC design for neural data processing- Familiarity with Python, Matlab, Simulink or other software for system simulation and modeling- Experience in data acquisition hardware for biomedical or neuroscience applicationsCompensation & Benefits- Salary: £46,000 - £60,000 per annum (negotiable based on experience)- Equity: Early-stage equity options available- Flexible hybrid working options- 25 days of holiday + public holidays- Pension plan and health benefitsHow to Apply If youre passionate about embedded systems and want to drive the future of neuroethology, wed love to hear from you.
