Overview of role

We have a great opportunity for a Data Scientist to join the Operational Planning team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use your Data Science and Machine Learning skills to improve day to day operations and to join an exciting and ambitious team looking to transform the London Underground through better use of our data. You will be collaborating with various teams and disciplines to help them achieve operational excellency.

You will be expected to design and run exploratory and hypothesis driven analysis either in an attempt to answer specific business questions or as a way to unlock additional value from our current datasets.

Key Accountabilities

Overlaying large and complex datasets from different systems/sources to test hypotheses and/or discover hidden relationships and useful information Use of advanced statistical analysis techniques including feature engineering and selection, and supervised and unsupervised machine learning, to extract the maximum intelligence from our data Develop and further enhance existing capability in deep learning techniques such as Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision Influencing the long term strategy of asset maintenance by challenging conventional industry's standards and driving condition monitoring maintenance Communicate the intelligence extracted from this analysis to key stakeholders in a simple way, focusing on business value and giving clear recommendations Drive the development and usage of predictive analytics within the business e.g. develop and test algorithms that can use existing data feeds to categorise asset behaviour and thus improve the management of that asset Give feedback on the quality and structure of our datasets and how this could be improved to enhance predictive analytics capabilities Identify potential new data sources and evaluate emerging technologies for data discovery and analytics usage Identify new opportunities to drive the innovation agenda across the business Support and coach developing areas of wider team in data analytics

Skills, Knowledge and Experience 

Skills

Essential

High degree of competence in working with large volumes of data and information from various sources – both structured and unstructured Ability to test hypotheses from raw datasets and draw statistically meaningful conclusions Ability to design robust classification algorithms that can meet a business requirement using machine learning techniques Programming. Data manipulation and statistical analysis within one or more of the following environments: R / Python Understanding of software development practices such as testing and version control and package development Ability to translate complex statistical findings or solutions into simple terms for digestion by key stakeholders Ability to continually update and develop skill set in line with changes in professional best practice Experience with Apache Spark and distributed computing systems (Desirable) Experience deploying models or services (esp. using docker) (Desirable)

Knowledge

Essential

Proven knowledge of data analysis and data science methods including:
- Probability and Statistics
- Simulation and optimisation
- Hypothesis testing
- Predictive data modelling including machine learning Advanced understanding of statistical software packages (e.g. R, Python with pandas / scikit-learn etc) Qualified to degree level in numerate discipline e.g. Maths / Physics / Statistics / Computer Science / Engineering / Operational Research. A good understanding of commercial and financial processes within a large organisation (Desirable) 

Experience

Experience (post-degree) in data science, with substantial exposure to statistical analysis and algorithm building using large and complex datasets. (Essential) Experience with cloud-based services such as those provided via Microsoft Azure. (Essential) Experience of asset performance modelling, analysis and reporting within large, complex organisations (Desirable)
