Post: CONSULTANT IN FORENSIC PSYCHiatry (LOW SECURE WOMEN)
base: LEVERNDALE HOSPITAL
Applications are invited for a part-time (6 PA) Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, with an interest in the management of women within secure mental health services and prison psychiatry to work with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Directorate of Forensic Mental Health and Learning Disabilities. This is an exciting opportunity for dynamic and enthusiastic individuals to join our service and take a full part in the ongoing development of the largest forensic service in Scotland.
This post will be open to applicants with a Forensic Psychiatry CCT, or eligibility to enter the specialist register in forensic psychiatry within 6 months of interview date.
The low secure service for women at Leverndale Hospital is based in Bute Ward. The ward runs a home-style model of care to promote the rehabilitation and recovery of the patient group. Most patients will step down from other secure service or IPCUs, but there may on occasions be direct admissions from the community. There is a full multi-disciplinary team including psychology, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, pharmacy and experienced nursing staff.
The forensic low secure service for women is an integral part of the forensic low secure service at Leverndale Hospital. In total the low secure service has 53 forensic in-patient beds across 5 wards for men and women with mental illness or learning disability and forensic needs. There are two 15 bedded low secure male low secure wards (Wards 5 & 6), 9 male low secure learning disability beds (Campsie) and a 9 bedded pre-discharge ward (Boulevard). The Directorate have plans to commission additional low secure beds to further develop the service and manage demand.
The Medium secure services is at Rowanbank Clinic, a 74 bed purpose built unit at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow. Rowanbank covers the West of Scotland region and hosts the national medium secure learning disability service.
The Directorate also has two Forensic Community Mental Health Teams covering Glasgow and Clyde areas, as well as the Forensic Community Learning Disability team covering the entire Health Board area. There are close links between all parts of the service.
In addition, the post will include sessional input to the NHS GG&C prison mental health teams (HMP Barlinnie, HMP Greenock and HMP Low Moss). Prison Healthcare is not managed by the Directorate but it is anticipated that the post-holder would be involved in ongoing Quality Improvement projects with colleagues to improve the delivery of mental health care to the prison population.
On call responsibilities cover the forensic psychiatry service, and the rota is separate to the adult mental health on-call rota. The forensic rota includes providing supervision to Higher trainees covering the local sheriff court diversion scheme (Glasgow, Paisley, Greenock and Dumbarton). On-call duties are shared with other consultant forensic psychiatrist colleagues on an approximately 1:13 rota.
