Job Summary & Purpose
Our Clinical Leads play a vital role within Psychiatry UK. This position is responsible for providing clinical leadership, ensuring high-quality and safe service delivery for patients, and aligning with strategic goals set by the Clinical Director. The Clinical Lead focuses on clinical governance, team support, and operational standards, working closely with the Clinical Director to drive continuous improvement and implement innovative strategies to enhance patient care and service efficiency.
The post holder will allocate their time across quality governance, leadership responsibilities, and operational oversight to ensure comprehensive support for the team and effective service delivery.

Role Outline
- Quality and Safety Oversight: The Clinical Lead will lead and oversee clinical services for patients, ensuring strict adherence to quality and safety standards. They will be responsible for developing and implementing quality improvement initiatives designed to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes, with regular evaluations to maintain high standards. They will chair the service governance meeting ensuring that the meeting is effective.
- Clinical Leadership: Providing clinical direction and support for their specialist team is a core duty of this role. The Clinical Lead will supervise clinicians, offer guidance on clinical protocols and best practices, and foster a collaborative clinical environment. Additionally, they will report regularly to the Clinical Director on service developments, quality metrics, and any challenges emerging within the team, ensuring alignment with Psychiatry UK’s strategic objectives.
- Team Management: The Clinical Lead will be involved in recruiting, training, and mentoring clinical staff within their specialist team, cultivating a resilient and high-performing workforce. They will conduct and chair regular MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) meetings to review cases, share insights, and enhance team collaboration. The Clinical Lead will also monitor the quality of work of newly joining consultants, providing feedback and support as needed.
- Clinical Operational Oversight: Overseeing the operational aspects of clinical services, the Clinical Lead will ensure processes are aligned with organisational objectives to optimise patient care pathways. This responsibility includes managing resource allocation and workflow to maintain efficient, patient-centered services.
- Service Development and Transformation: The Clinical Lead will drive initiatives that foster innovation and enhance service delivery, working collaboratively with clinical staff, the Clinical Director, and external stakeholders. They will introduce evidence-based strategies and interventions, focusing on improving patient outcomes and engagement across the service.
- Performance Management: Monitoring clinician performance and addressing any areas for improvement will be a key focus. The Clinical Lead will provide constructive feedback, support, and targeted interventions to maintain and elevate service quality.
- Recruitment: The Clinical Lead will oversee the recruitment and clinical induction of new team members, ensuring that the service remains well-staffed and capable of meeting patient demand. This will involve coordinating with the People & Culture Team and conducting induction programs to integrate new clinicians into the team effectively.
- Clinical Capacity: Working with their specialist team, the Clinical Lead will help to expand clinical capacity, ensuring that resources and staffing levels are sufficient to meet patient needs while maintaining high standards of care.
- Engagement and Collaboration: The Clinical Lead will foster strong working relationships with clinical staff, creating a supportive and engaged environment. Additionally, they will collaborate closely with the Clinical Director to ensure that team objectives are in line with the wider organisational goals. Engagement with external partners will be vital to improve care pathways and advocate effectively for the needs of patients.
Person Specification
Essential Areas:
- Medical Degree with postgraduate qualifications (MRCPsych or equivalent).
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice, and inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register.
- Extensive clinical experience in mental health.
- Senior medical management experience in a complex healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising clinical teams and managing performance.
- Evidence of participation in clinical audits or quality improvement initiatives.
DesirableAreas:
- Teaching qualifications or experience in delivering clinical education.
- Research experience, with contributions to publications or presentations at conferences related to mental health.
- Senior management degree (e.g., MBA or equivalent).
- Experience with service development and transformation projects in healthcare.
- Familiarity with budget management and resource allocation in a clinical setting.
Knowledge & Skills Specification
- In-depth knowledge of clinical governance, including compliance with relevant standards and regulations in mental health services.
- Strong leadership and organisational abilities to manage, inspire, and develop clinical teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with colleagues, external stakeholders, and patients.
- Proficient in decision-making and complex problem-solving, particularly in high-stakes or crisis situations.

- Advanced understanding of epidemiology, healthcare evaluation, and statistical analysis in mental health.

- Project management skills, including change management and facilitating staff development initiatives.
- Experience in developing and implementing protocols for clinical risk management and safeguarding.
- Ability to lead and mentor others in a clinical and educational capacity.
- Proficiency in IT systems, including clinical databases and reporting software, and familiarity with electronic health records.
Compensation
Up to £155,000 (plus £1k home-working allowance per annum)
