AI is changing how software is developed, but getting the most from it still requires experienced engineers who understand how complex systems fit together.

This is an opportunity to join a software engineering team already using AI-assisted and agentic development to build, improve and modernise business-critical systems.

You'll work with TypeScript, Node.js and Google Cloud, helping modernise an established platform while contributing to new projects supporting international expansion.

Backend Software Engineer - TypeScript
Southampton, Hampshire | £50,000-£60,000 | Hybrid, 2 days per week in the office

The opportunity

You'll join an established technology-led logistics business, working within the team responsible for connecting its platform to international delivery networks.

The work involves developing APIs and integrations that manage parcel shipments, labelling and tracking, while improving the reliability and scalability of systems processing high volumes of transactions.

The team is also modernising older applications, moving services towards TypeScript and Google Cloud, with future projects including replacing existing platforms and supporting expansion into new markets.

What you'll be doing

  • Developing backend services and APIs using TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Building reliable integrations with third-party systems.
  • Solving distributed systems challenges involving retries, failures and data consistency.
  • Modernising existing applications and migrating services to Google Cloud.
  • Using AI-assisted development and agentic workflows to accelerate delivery.
  • Taking ownership of development through to deployment and production support.

What we're looking for

You'll be a capable backend developer who enjoys solving technical problems, takes ownership and can work independently within a collaborative team.

You'll need commercial experience with TypeScript, Node.js, APIs and distributed systems, alongside an understanding of cloud-based development.

An interest in AI-assisted development is important, particularly how it can improve productivity without compromising engineering quality.

Experience with Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform, Pub/Sub or C# would be beneficial, but isn't essential.

Benefits

  • 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, with the option to buy or sell leave.
  • Additional half-day birthday leave.
  • Pension, life assurance and Healthshield Cash Plan.
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity pay.
  • Employee assistance programme and wellbeing support.
  • Employee discounts, cycle-to-work scheme and recognition awards.

What Is an AI Forward Deployed Engineer? The Fastest-Growing Job in AI for 2026

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
