AI Platform Engineer - TypeScript | AWS | MCP | Agentic AI

Salary: £80,000
Location: London

We're working with an established, technology-led business in the sports betting industry that's making a significant investment in AI, with ambitious plans to transform how its platform operates, automate complex processes and deliver increasingly personalised customer experiences.

Operating a sophisticated AWS-hosted platform comprising 36 predominantly TypeScript-based microservices, the business is establishing a dedicated AI engineering function to integrate LLMs and agentic technologies directly into its existing architecture.

We're looking for an AI Platform Engineer to join this newly established function, working alongside an experienced technical lead to design and build a Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway that will enable AI agents and LLMs to securely interact with the company's existing services, APIs and business logic.

This is a genuine opportunity to get involved at the beginning of a long-term AI transformation programme, with significant technical ownership, architectural input and the opportunity to shape how AI is adopted across an established commercial platform.

You'll be working with modern technologies including TypeScript, AWS, Python, MCP and agentic AI, tackling real-world engineering challenges rather than isolated proofs of concept. As the function develops, there will also be opportunities to influence engineering standards, contribute to the wider AI roadmap and help introduce new capabilities across the business.

Whether you're an experienced AI Engineer or a strong Backend Software Engineer who's already started working with LLMs and agentic technologies, this is an opportunity to build on your existing expertise while developing valuable, hands-on experience with production AI systems.

The Role

The business operates a sophisticated, AWS-hosted sportsbook platform comprising 36 predominantly TypeScript-based microservices.

The initial project will focus on designing and developing a Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway, enabling AI agents and Large Language Models to securely interact with the platform's existing microservices, APIs and business logic.

Beyond this, you'll help develop AI-powered automation, agentic workflows and intelligent platform capabilities, contributing towards the longer-term ambition of delivering a highly personalised customer experience.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing and implementing an MCP gateway across an established microservices architecture.
  • Building secure integrations between LLMs, AI agents and existing backend services.
  • Developing scalable, production-quality solutions using TypeScript, JavaScript and AWS.
  • Working with the technical lead to shape the architecture, engineering standards and delivery roadmap.
  • Developing AI-driven workflows and operational automations using LLMs and agentic technologies.
  • Implementing appropriate authentication, authorisation, security and performance controls.
  • Collaborating with existing engineering teams to integrate AI capabilities into the wider platform.
  • Helping establish the foundations for a scalable, long-term AI engineering capability.

What We're Looking For

First and foremost, we're looking for a strong Software Engineer with excellent backend engineering fundamentals.

You don't necessarily need to have spent years specialising in AI. We're equally interested in engineers who have already delivered production AI integrations and those with a strong software engineering background who have started developing practical experience with MCP, LLMs and agentic systems.

Essential experience:

  • Strong commercial software engineering experience, particularly with TypeScript, JavaScript and Node.js.
  • Experience designing and developing backend services within a microservices or distributed systems architecture.
  • Strong understanding of AWS and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience developing and integrating REST APIs and backend services.
  • Practical exposure to LLMs, AI agents, MCP or AI-powered integrations.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, engineering principles and production-quality development.
  • Ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of technical challenges.

Desirable experience:

  • Hands-on experience building MCP servers, gateways or tool integrations.
  • Python development, particularly FastAPI or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex or comparable agent frameworks.
  • LLM function calling, tool use and agent orchestration.
  • API gateways, OAuth2, JWT and secure service-to-service communication.
  • JSON-RPC, Server-Sent Events (SSE), WebSockets or asynchronous programming.
  • Experience designing and deploying production AI applications.

If you're a strong backend engineer who's already building with AI, or an experienced AI engineer who enjoys solving complex software engineering challenges, we'd be keen to hear from you.

RSG Plc is acting as an Employment Agency in relation to this vacancy.

What Is an AI Forward Deployed Engineer? The Fastest-Growing Job in AI for 2026

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
