Research and optimise AI agents for national security - 12 month FTC

This National Security focused team is doing innovative work building both robust AI agents and realistic training environments for AI agents that will tackle cyber security threats against critical national infrastructure from water systems and power grids to military bases and government systems. They are urgently seeking a researcher to join the team on a 12-month fixed term contract.

You will come from a software, electronics or engineering background with a PhD in cyber/information security, AI, machine learning or similar with specific research experience in systems security, network security, cyber-physical systems security, AI security, formal verification or systems and software assurance. Day-to-day you will be working to advance the state-of-the-art in three primary areas:

* Realistic environments to train and validate AI agents which mimic real-world networks.

* Novel AI agent architectures and technologies.

* AI agent evaluation tasks for cyber security.

Requirements:

* A PhD (or equivalent research experience) in cyber security, information security, AI or a related area. Those who haven’t been awarded their PhD yet will also be considered.

* Strong software development skills including Python and its various AI/ML focused libraries, version control (git) and Linux.

* A research mindset, able to plan and carry out a programme of research independently or collaboratively and produce publication standard papers and deliver technical presentations to diverse audiences.

* UK nationality and UK residency for at least 5 years – this role requires eligibility for SC level security clearance.

Offices are in central London with excellent nearby tube and national rail links. Hybrid working is the norm with just 1 day per week in the office required (although occasional meetings may require you to be present more than that). This makes commuting from outside London both practical and practiced by current members of staff.

If you have been watching AI job boards over the past year, one title keeps surfacing again and again: the forward deployed engineer, or FDE. It has gone from a niche term known mainly to Palantir alumni to arguably the hottest role in the entire AI hiring market. Job postings for forward deployed engineers have exploded, salaries have climbed past levels most software engineers will ever see, and the biggest names in AI — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Salesforce, Databricks and Palantir — are all competing for the same small pool of talent. So what exactly is an AI forward deployed engineer, why has demand surged so dramatically, and how do you position yourself to land one of these roles? This guide breaks it all down for AI engineers, software engineers and data scientists looking at their next move.
