Lead Software Engineer

Hybrid - Newcastle

A well-establishedTech Consultancybased in Newcastle are on the lookout for a skilled Lead Software Engineer (ideally with experience usingJava and Angular) to join one of their Agile squads. They’re offering the opportunity to work with a really modern tech stack, where you will be building really scalable greenfield solutions in a really fun and flexible work environment.

They’ve got a really busy pipeline of projects, really strong relationships with their long list of clients which spirals across multiple sectors (Fintech, Renewables, Oil & Gas, Public + many more!). It’s a really unique environment where Engineers can have a lot of choice in what projects they want to join and tech they want to work with – this is highlighted with the tenure of many of their team, as many have been with the business for 5-10 years (it’s really uncommon for someone to have a short-stint here!).

Presently, they’ve got a couple requirements to join one of theirAgile squadswhere you’ll be working on a core project for one of their key clients using Java and Angular – so are ideally looking for Engineers that feel comfortable with these technologies. However, generally the organisation are prettytech agnosticand it’s a great environment for learning different technologies. They also using Python, .Net, TypeScript and are big users of Cloud Services (both AWS and Azure) – so thereis plenty of technologies to learnhere.

You’ll be joining a squad of circa 4-6 Engineers (depending on the project) and usually you’ll be with the project from its initial design straight through to its completion – so you’ll really pick up good exposure toworking on large-scale projects. The teams are also really well defined as each will usually have a Project Lead, Software Architect, Front-End, Back-End or Full Stack Engineers, UX Specialists, Automation Engineers and DevOps Engineers.

What separates them from other consultancies isyou’ll never be offshored to their client, you’ll work within the business at all times (either onsite or at home). They also have a pretty strictno-overtime policy, as they’re massive on finding the right work-to-life balance – so fortunately no really tight-deadlines or working late into the night. On top of this, theyoffer really flexible working– they’re a family first organisation so the school drop off / pick up or even mid-day nursery appointments are all fine here. Not to mention, the company run multiple events from guest speakers to even weekly lunch treats for the team!

Their office is based in centralNewcastle, where it’s really accessible by public transport links. They ideally hope people can pop into the offices once a week for SPRINTS / Meetings / Tech events etc but are pretty flex with this.

They offer a competitive salary for this role (more than happy to discuss figures before submitting an application). This is on-top of a fairly competitive benefits package which includes an annual training allowance, good pension, loyal rewarding holiday scheme + many more.

If you match most of the criteria, please do apply or feel free to reach out to Molly Candlish at Cathcart Technology to find out more.

Maths for AI Jobs: The Only Topics You Actually Need (& How to Learn Them)

If you are a software engineer, data scientist or analyst looking to move into AI or you are a UK undergraduate or postgraduate in computer science, maths, engineering or a related subject applying for AI roles, the maths can feel like the biggest barrier. Job descriptions say “strong maths” or “solid fundamentals” but rarely spell out what that means day to day. The good news is you do not need a full maths degree worth of theory to start applying. For most UK roles like Machine Learning Engineer, AI Engineer, Data Scientist, Applied Scientist, NLP Engineer or Computer Vision Engineer, the maths you actually use again & again is concentrated in a handful of topics: Linear algebra essentials Probability & statistics for uncertainty & evaluation Calculus essentials for gradients & backprop Optimisation basics for training & tuning A small amount of discrete maths for practical reasoning This guide turns vague requirements into a clear checklist, a 6-week learning plan & portfolio projects that prove you can translate maths into working code.

Neurodiversity in AI Careers: Turning Different Thinking into a Superpower

The AI industry moves quickly, breaks rules & rewards people who see the world differently. That makes it a natural home for many neurodivergent people – including those with ADHD, autism & dyslexia. If you’re neurodivergent & considering a career in artificial intelligence, you might have been told your brain is “too much”, “too scattered” or “too different” for a technical field. In reality, many of the strengths that come with ADHD, autism & dyslexia map beautifully onto AI work – from spotting patterns in data to creative problem-solving & deep focus. This guide is written for AI job seekers in the UK. We’ll explore: What neurodiversity means in an AI context How ADHD, autism & dyslexia strengths match specific AI roles Practical workplace adjustments you can ask for under UK law How to talk about your neurodivergence during applications & interviews By the end, you’ll have a clearer picture of where you might thrive in AI – & how to set yourself up for success.
