BAE Systems Digital Intelligence is home to 4,500 digital, cyber, and intelligence experts. We work across 10 countries to collect, connect, and understand complex data, enabling governments, armed forces, and businesses to unlock digital advantages in demanding environments.
We are seeking a senior researcher to join our expanding Data and Decision Support Capability. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Machine Learning (ML) and/or statistical signal processing, with excellent Python programming skills and experience with relevant libraries and toolboxes. This role is within our Advanced Information Processing (AIP) group, focusing on developing inference algorithms and applying AI/ML to sequential data and decision-making processes. You will work on diverse research topics for clients in space, defense, security, and commercial sectors, as well as internal projects. There will also be opportunities to collaborate with academic partners and pursue personal research interests.
The Data and Decision Support Capability encompasses teams working on AI/ML applications such as RF, EW, radar, sonar, data fusion, reinforcement learning, agent-based ML, autonomy, image analysis, generative AI, LLMs, NLP, and graph ML. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and engage in both technical challenges and customer-facing tasks.
Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent industry experience in a relevant discipline, with several years of applying AI/ML or statistical signal processing to sensor time-series data and decision-making. Experience in domains like RF communications, electromagnetic warfare, radar, acoustic processing, sensor fusion, autonomy, human-machine teaming, or space-domain awareness is highly desirable. Leadership experience in research project delivery is a plus.
Typical Responsibilities: Lead technical project delivery and supervise junior researchers; prepare reports and proposals.
Drive novel research in collaboration with partners and universities.
Develop prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstrators.
Own project tasks and deliver to high standards.
Work independently and within teams on technical projects.
Present results to technical and non-technical audiences.
Mentor junior staff on research topics.
Publish and patent innovative concepts and findings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field, with expertise in applying AI/ML or signal processing to sequential data.
Experience in domains such as RF, EW, radar, acoustic processing, sensor fusion, autonomy, or space awareness.
Proficiency in Python software development.
Experience with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn.
Legal right to work in the UK.
Publication record in relevant journals or conferences is advantageous.
Interest in working in a secure environment is desirable but not essential.
