Job Purpose
The role of the Senior Materials Engineer (SME) is to select the most suitable materials for manufacturing that are also efficient and cost-effective to produce. Engage in development-led projects to improve product performance and support and/or lead failure investigations to identify root causes of failures in the field and production.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • The SME needs to assess the mechanical, chemical and physical attributes and electrochemical performance to ensure that the final product meets the expectations of the customer and EnerSys management as well as meeting industry standards.  As part of the Materials group, the main focus for this position is the evaluation and qualification of new and alternative materials used in battery manufacture and ensure that they are suitable for production environments.
  • They should have experience of defining test plans and procedures, be able to analyse data and summarise their findings for management reports. The SME is expected to supervise and manage technical builds on manufacturing lines to ensure test builds are carried out as planned.
  • They need to collaborate closely with the design and engineering functions and manufacturing functions such as quality, production and product validation and verification teams. These teams may be at the local level when coordinating evaluations in their location or working with global teams to coordinate activities in different manufacturing locations within EnerSys.
  • The SME needs to communicate effectively in writing, providing timely, concise and accurate reports summarising evaluations and project progress.
  • The SME is responsible for the validation of prototypes and materials and ensuring they both conform to the relevant specifications.
  • The SME should work with the Design Managers to define specifications for new materials, or new applications for existing materials.

 

Qualifications/ Experience / Knowledge

Required qualification and level of professional experience: 

  • University level degree (3-5 years) in an Engineering discipline plus 5+ years industrial experience or a 2-year technical degree plus 7+ yrs in related technical field with experience in battery manufacturing processes (essential)
  • Required competencies for this position include knowledge of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers), especially those relevant for batteries (particularly lead/Pb and Lithium chemistries) and battery systems. (essential)
  • A basic understanding of electrochemistry is also essential.
  • Knowledge and experience in the processes required for battery manufacture is advantageous but not essential. 
  • Experience working in EHS: ISO 14001 environment 
  • Experience working in Quality : ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 environment
  • Lean Manufacturing techniques: Knowledge of the tools used (preferrable)
  • Communication / Information : Excellent written and verbal communication skills, Cross-functional management and team workFunctional written and verbal English skillsSelf motivated and able to progress project work with minimal supervision
  • Others: Experience using ERP Systems (preferably SAP) for bill of materials, orders, etc. Experience of PLM environments (such as Windchill)Ability to use statistical analysis software (such as Minitab)
Skills / Competencies
  • Organisational Skills: Excellent organizational skills / ability to lead and manage small and medium sized projects.
  • Innovation: A creative and proactive attitude is encouraged.
  • Language Skills: Must be fluent in verbal and written English, the ability to speak a second language such as French would be beneficial.
  • Mathematical Skills: Engineering Level math skill required.
  • Reasoning Ability: Must possess the ability to use reasoning in root cause problem solving.
  • Project Management: Must have organisational skills to provide technical leadership and manage small and medium sized projects.
  • Computer Skills: Must have basic computer skills including the ability to use MS Office 365 and MS Teams. Experience with programming languages such as Python would be of interest. Should have a basic understanding of how Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence can benefit the development of new materials in electrochemical systems.
  • Other Skills and Abilities  : Must have the ability to lead, plan, and coordinate using strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to work with multinational, remote and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Travel: International air travel is required, applicants should hold a valid passport. Destinations include, but not limited to, Europe and North America.
