Overview

Kraken is the operating system for utilities of the future. Built in-house at Octopus Energy, Kraken powers energy companies and utilities around the globe—in 10 countries and counting—and licenses software to giants like Origin Energy in Australia and Tokyo Gas in Japan. The mission is to accelerate the renewable transition and bring affordable green energy to the world. Kraken’s platform supports data-driven tariffs and powers a large share of grid-scale batteries in the UK. The company uses AI tools to improve agent productivity and customer satisfaction, with a focus on hiring clever, curious, and self-driven people and giving them autonomy.

Our ML team includes ML engineers, front-end and back-end engineers to rapidly prototype and deploy innovative tools. You’ll be part of a small expert team tackling high-priority problems, building AI tooling, automating processes, and defining patterns for AI success across the business. You’ll work across the full product lifecycle from exploration to rapid prototyping, aligning ideas with business value and validating approaches fast. LLMs, RAG, finetuning and reinforcement learning will be core, with Python and Kubernetes used to deploy production systems.

What you'll do
  • Work with a high performance team of LLM, MLOps, backend and frontend engineers
  • Tackle the biggest problems facing the company, providing broad exposure and the freedom to define novel approaches
  • Help LLMs understand and interact with millions of lines of code for Kraken, using techniques such as GraphRAG, agentic workflows, finetuning and reinforcement learning
  • Apply classic ML and NLP techniques to complement and improve LLM systems
  • Act as a center of excellence for AI across the business, consulting teams on LLM use and lifting product quality
  • Stay at the forefront of AI advancements and assess their technical implications for the team and business
  • Collaborate with technical and product leadership to develop research avenues and priorities
  • Mentor and inspire other MLOps and ML engineers to support their development
What you'll need
  • Curious and self-driven mindset; ability to make decisions and solve novel problems with limited assistance
  • 2+ years of production experience with LLMs beyond POC and deep technical understanding of diverse techniques (e.g., advanced RAG, tool calling, finetuning, RL)
  • Interest in cutting-edge AI systems in software engineering, including AI copilots or autonomous software engineering bots
  • 5+ years of experience with traditional ML techniques, including training, deployment, and production monitoring with feedback loops
  • Strong interest in Gen AI and ML, with ability to translate research trends into business value
It would be great if you had
  • Experience working with large codebases and collaborating across multiple engineering teams in large companies
  • Experience with diverse LLM deployment methods (e.g., hosted finetuned models via services like Bedrock, or engines like vLLM)
  • Experience as a thought leader in engineering excellence, including conference or meetup talks
