Head of Artificial Intelligence

At Google DeepMind, we value diversity of experience, knowledge, backgrounds and perspectives and harness these qualities to create extraordinary impact. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law. If you have a disability or additional need that requires accommodation, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Snapshot

Our special interdisciplinary team combines the best techniques from deep learning, reinforcement learning and systems neuroscience to build general-purpose learning algorithms. We have already made a number of high profile breakthroughs towards building artificial general intelligence, and we have all the ingredients in place to make further significant progress over the coming years.

About Us

We’re a dedicated scientific community, committed to “solving intelligence” and ensuring our technology is used for widespread public benefit. We’ve built a supportive and inclusive environment where collaboration is encouraged and learning is shared freely. We don’t set limits based on what others think is possible or impossible. We drive ourselves and inspire each other to push boundaries and achieve ambitious goals.

The Role

To succeed in this role you will need to be passionate about advancing science using recent breakthroughs in large language models, in addition to standard machine learning and other computational techniques. Youll join an interdisciplinary team of domain experts, ML researchers and engineers exploring a diverse set of important scientific problems in biology, physics, mathematics and other areas. Our work is organised into several longer-term focus areas which aim to achieve step changes to the state-of-the-art (as exemplified in e.g.AlphaFold,AlphaMissenseandFunSearch). Youll leverage our unique mix of expertise, data and computational resources to experiment and iterate both rapidly and at scale.

As an embedded LLM Research Engineer you will collaborate with researchers and software engineers to develop and run experiments exploring new applications of AI - particularly LLMs - to science problems. The team is pioneering in many different domains so you may take part in exploratory work validating early ideas or work in a maturing area to deepen and exploit a promising line of research. You may also contribute to the scientific knowledge and experience of the team with your own scientific domain knowledge. You will work with internal and external researchers on pioneering research bridging AI and science.

Key responsibilities:

  • Plan and perform rapid prototyping of machine learning techniques applied to problems in science.
  • Undertake exploratory analysis to inform experimentation and research directions.
  • Design and run scalable infrastructure and procedures to train and evaluate modern machine learning systems.
  • Implement tools, libraries and frameworks, and build on existing systems, to speed up and enable new research.
  • Report and present software developments, experimental results and data analysis clearly and efficiently.
  • Collaborate with internal and external scientific domain experts.

The role will suit candidates who enjoy working in a heavily experimental setting with large and noisy datasets and who wish to immerse themselves in innovative science, LLM, ML and AI research.

About You

In order to set you up for success as a Research Engineer at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Masters degree in computer science, electrical engineering, science, mathematics or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with large language models (LLMs), e.g. fine-tuning and inference.
  • Experience working with large and noisy datasets.
  • Experience with at least one programming language (with a preference for those commonly used in machine learning or scientific computing such as Python or C++).
  • Knowledge of linear algebra, calculus and statistics equivalent to at least first-year university coursework.
  • Experience exploring, analysing and visualising data.
  • Experience using Jax, PyTorch, TensorFlow, NumPy, Pandas or similar ML/scientific libraries.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience with advanced LLM training and inference procedures e.g. RLXF and variants, retrieval, chain-of-thought and tool use.
  • Experience scaling LLMs and optimizing for performance.
  • Experience collaborating across fields.
  • Scientific domain knowledge (particularly biology).
  • Experience working with large, complex, distributed systems.

When assessing technical background we will take a holistic view of the mix of scientific, ML and computational experience. Wedo notexpect you to be an expert in all fields simultaneously. However, except for scientific knowledge, since the role serves as a bridge between all three, someexperience in each is necessary.

Applications close: Tuesday 18th February at 5pm GMT.

Contract vs Permanent AI Jobs: Which Pays Better in 2025?

n the ever-evolving world of technology, the competition for top talent in artificial intelligence (AI) is intense—and the rewards are significant. By 2025, AI roles in machine learning, natural language processing, data science, and robotics are expected to be among the highest-paid professions within the UK technology sector. As an AI professional, deciding between contracting (either as a day‑rate contractor or via fixed-term contracts) and permanent employment could drastically impact your take‑home pay, job security, and career trajectory. In this article, we will delve into the various types of AI roles in 2025—particularly focusing on day‑rate contracting, fixed-term contract (FTC) roles, and permanent positions. We will compare the earning potential across these three employment types, discuss the key pros and cons, and provide practical examples of how your annual take‑home pay might differ under each scenario. Whether you are already working in AI or looking to break into this booming field, understanding these employment options will help you make an informed decision on your next move.

AI Jobs for Non‑Technical Professionals: Where Do You Fit In?

Your Seat at the AI Table Artificial Intelligence (AI) has left the lab and entered boardrooms, high‑street banks, hospitals and marketing agencies across the United Kingdom. Yet a stubborn myth lingers: “AI careers are only for coders and PhDs.” If you can’t write TensorFlow, surely you have no place in the conversation—right? Wrong. According to PwC’s UK AI Jobs Barometer 2024, vacancies mentioning AI rose 61 % year‑on‑year, but only 35 % of those adverts required advanced programming skills (pwc.co.uk). The Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) likewise reports that Britain’s fastest‑growing AI employers are “actively recruiting non‑technical talent to scale responsibly” (gov.uk). Put simply, the nation needs communicators, strategists, ethicists, marketers and project leaders every bit as urgently as it needs machine‑learning engineers. This 2,500‑word guide shows where you fit in—and how to land an AI role without touching a line of Python.

ElevenLabs AI Jobs in 2025: Your Complete UK Guide to Crafting Human‑Level Voice Technology

"Make any voice sound infinitely human." That tagline catapulted ElevenLabs from hack‑day prototype to unicorn‑status voice‑AI platform in under three years. The London‑ and New York‑based start‑up’s text‑to‑speech, dubbing and voice‑cloning APIs now serve publishers, film studios, ed‑tech giants and accessibility apps across 45 languages. After an $80 m Series B round in January 2024—which pushed valuation above $1 bn—ElevenLabs is scaling fast, doubling revenue every quarter and hiring aggressively. If you’re an ML engineer who dreams in spectrograms, an audio‑DSP wizard or a product storyteller who can translate jargon into creative workflows, this guide explains how to land an ElevenLabs AI job in 2025.
