Research Associate in Transportation Engineering and Data Science

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position in transportation engineering and data science based in the Centre for Transport Engineering and Modelling at Imperial College London and working as part of the Transport Strategy Centre. The objective of the research post is to develop and apply data science methods to benchmark, evaluate and forecast the performance of aviation systems. A particular aspect of performance that the research will focus on is the transition to net-zero aviation and the evaluation of associated interventions via causal inference.


The research will involve manipulation and analysis of large and high-dimensional datasets as well as theoretical modelling work and causal inference. The Research Associate must be self-motivated, be able to produce high quality original research, and have experience in preparing papers for journal publication and conference submission. They will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.


Hold a PhD in Civil/and or Aviation Transport Engineering, Transport Planning, transport modelling, maths/statistics, data science or computer science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
Practical experience writing in a research environment and/or publication in relevant and refereed journals
Knowledge of state-of-the art statistical modelling, causal inference, and data centric engineering techniques
Deep understanding of airport/aviation operations
Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
Willingness to work as part of a team and to be open-minded and cooperative
Willingness to travel both within the United Kingdom and abroad to conduct research and attend conferences
