This is an 18-month appointment as a Research Assistant/Associate in Computational Methods for Sustainable Aviation open at the of Imperial College London. The post is funded by the (Brahmal Institute) to advance computational methods for the design and reliability assessment of technology solutions for sustainable aerospace and accelerate the transition to environmentally friendly aviation.


You will be part of a vibrant cross-disciplinary effort to make sustainable aviation possible and contribute to the advancement of research on multidisciplinary simulation-based optimization and multisource artificial learning schemes. You will be responsible for investigating and developing computational methods for a more efficient design, integration and reliability assessment of aerospace systems, which play a pivotal role to safely enable aerospace sustainability and accelerate the journey towards net zero aviation.


Applications are encouraged from candidates with research interests and demonstrable experience in two or more of the following areas:

Computational methods for modelling, simulation and optimization of physical systems and engineering solutions, also accounting for uncertainties. Scientific machine learning including formulations for multisource, physics-based and domain aware learning schemes, and their application to engineering problems. Design and/or reliability assessment of technology solutions for sustainable air transportation and space exploration. System-level analysis for the assessment of aircraft technologies and operational scenarios for sustainable aviation. Familiarity with the development and execution of experimental campaigns for validation of models and methods is considered valuable plus experience in interacting and collaborating with the international scientific community and research task groups is considered an asset.

Research Associate:Hold a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computational Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

Research Assistant:A first / masters degree (or equivalent) in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computational Science and Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
