Contract Period:   1st Sept 2024 – 31st Aug 2026 (24 months)

Salary Range:      £35,000- £45,000 per annum (dependent on experience)

Location:              Office based in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, UK (No Hybrid)

Are you passionate about developing new ways of feeding the planet? We are driving positive change in the agricultural industry and your skills could help us do this. We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Software Engineer to join a dynamic, engaging, and multidisciplinary team working in AgriTech R&D.

This position is suitable for someone who is self-motivated, organized and a problem-solver, and with demonstrable experience in developing solutions to problems through the development of Python-based applications.

You will be joining two new and exciting recently funded projects aiming towards commercial products to be deployed in the field. As an integral member of the team, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and validating Python applications across a wide range of problems - from User Interface development using libraries such as Kivy, to implementing and deploying Lambda functions aggregating and displaying data in a live dashboard. Alongside this, you will have the opportunity to drive software development guidelines within the business to ensure high-quality software is commercialised.

Join our multidisciplinary team of machine learning engineers, software developers, hardware engineers, scientists, and project management professionals, all working to bring new, innovative solutions to issues seen within the fresh produce industry. You will be based at the B-hive Innovation offices, which are integrated into the Lincoln Science and Innovation Park, in the heart of Lincoln.

Job Description

The role will involve delivering high-quality Python applications in line with milestones and deliverables on innovative research projects being carried out between B-hive Innovations and external collaborators.

The primary focus of the role will be to design Python-based solutions to help the successful delivery of Innovate UK-funded projects, and to implement and validate these solutions for real-world usage.

The job holder will be expected to disseminate progress and results both internally and in external project meetings, as well as at conferences/trade shows or other events.

Key Responsibilities

·      Design, implement and deploy Python applications that are reusable, testable, and efficient across all projects

within the business.80%                                                                            

·      Support the business with technological infrastructure and frameworks for successful delivery of projects (AWS,

MongoDB, etc).10%

·      To keep abreast of advances within the field of software engineering and Python

Development.5%

·      In conjunction with the Marketing Manager, represent B-Hive Innovations at external events (conferences, trade

shows) and help to communicate project results to peers and to lay members of the agricultural industry, including

farmers.5%

Working Relationships

The job holder will report to the Head of Machine Learning at B-hive Innovations. Also you are expected to develop productive and professional working relationships with external collaborators and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

·      Holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or a related field.

·      Has a least three years of industrial experience designing (not to include experience gained while in education),

implementing, and validating software applications, particularly Python applications, at a commercial level.

·      Has a track record of being self-motivated and driving development work.

·      Is proficient in version control systems (e.g. Git)

Desirable Experience Include:

·      Experience with Amazon Web Services, especially Amazon Simple Storage Service, and Lambda functions.

·      Experience of Software Unit Test automation and tools (LDRA, Parasoft etc).

·      Experience with other programming languages (C/C++, Java, etc).

·      Experience with MongoDB or NoSQL.

·      Experience working in an Agile environment and tools (e.g. JIRA, Trello, etc).

·      Has a driving license that permits them to drive within the UK
