R&D Digital & Tech is at the forefront, working hand in hand with the R&D business and applying industry leading technologies, a product-centric mindset and agile approach to deliver core capabilities.  The Portfolio & PPRM team addresses the business needs of Portfolio, Pipeline Project Management, Strategy Resource Management, R&D Finance and Business Development.  Technology aligned to this area will cover the breadth of acquiring, managing and transforming operational data pertinent to planning and managing R&D programs. We equip R&D leaders with the essential details of upcoming project milestones, resource needs and capacity, so that trade-off decisions can be made nimbly in support of the evolving portfolio.

Job Purpose:

The Principal Product Owner for EPE & IPE Data is accountable for partnering with R&D Finance on the strategic planning, delivery and lifecycle management of solutions that enable access to trusted external (EPE) and internal (IPE) project expense data to R&D Finance and other R&D functions.  This subsequently enables reporting, cost forecasting / cost allocation and financial compliance.

This role is responsible for contributing to the delivery of data domain driven strategy by establishing Data Products from data being exposed from R&D Finance systems using Agile DevOps methodology, identifying, prioritizing, and realizing high-value opportunities.  The individual must demonstrate both depth and breadth across key product management competencies e.g., Business case development, roadmap definition, Software Development Lifecycle and delivery, Testing, DevOps, Data Science/Analytics, and cloud. Can collaborate with experts from other subject domains.  In addition, the role will need to have an appreciation of engineering technologies, practices and frameworks such as cloud-based platforms, data analytics, machine learning, and data streaming.  Examples of technologies include Azure Devops/Jenkins, Selenium, JUnit/NUnit, SAFe, Kanban, JavaScript, Python, R, Denodo, Equalum, Apache Kafka, Azure/GCP, JAVA, .NET Core etc. 

The Principal Product Owner - EPE & IPE Data role will provide you the opportunity to lead key activities to progress your career.  These responsibilities include the following:

  • Technology Strategy & Enablement: In the role of trusted advisor, bring strong domain knowledge in data fabric, data products and FAIR data principles, including:  metadata management, access controls and versioning, data dictionaries and glossaries, data quality checks and cleansing processes, and lineage analysis to track data provenance and usage.  Maintains awareness of emerging data management trends and technologies and advise on potential implementation within the data fabric.  Monitor and report on key data quality metrics and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Demand management: Collaborate with R&D stakeholders to capture, manage and prioritize requirements and use cases for the product backlog alongside technical investments to produce a roadmap that delivers the highest business value.  Accountable for delivering on the product backlog within the available budget.

  • Governance: Establish business value, manage delivery and service performance and manage business risk within the scope of their product.  Responsible for representing the product in governance boards such as Steering and Design Authority.

  • Product/Project Delivery: Design and deliver the optimal set of products and services which meets the business strategy and requirements.   Accountable for creation and execution of the product roadmap.  The ability to think big picture and customer first is imperative.

  • Quality, Risk & Compliance: Accountable for ensuring the product within the domain is compliant with internal security and risk management policies and practices, as well as external regulatory and statutory requirements e.g. GxP and that Tech continuity plans are in place for all critical products.

  • Feature Definition: Proven ability to translate customer requests, competitive activities, and industry trends into value drivers of new technology solutions and product requirements that can be easily understood by product teams, developers and other key constituencies within the organization.  Facilitate workshops to ensure alignment and clarification of business needs and requirements.  

  • Service Management: Responsible for ensuring any changes are delivered in accordance to the services levels that are in place, to ensure adherence to those SLAs, and directly managing any Level 3 support issues and escalations.  Accountable for Lifecycle Management of the product.

  • People Management: Will work in collaboration with the broader team to drive and deliver business value to tight timelines adhering to the release management calendar where applicable. Line management of external consultants and contract workers.

  • Adoption strategy & change management: in the role of change agent, support both Digital+Tech team(s) and R&D stakeholders in agile approaches to solution development and adoption, building excitement, momentum, visible success stories and clear value-based versions of vision as roadmap plans come to life.

Why You?

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or Data Science

  • 5+ years experience in product design (e.g. personas, user journeys, process flows, wireframes) and systems design and delivery of Digital / Technology solutions

  • 3+ years Life Science and R&D processes experience

  • 1+ year experience in PL/SQL and data orchestration, data governance, data quality management, data modeling and metadata management

  • 1+ year experience with creating dashboards, Data Visualization, and Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI)

  • 1+ year experience in Agile/scrum delivery

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Track record in successful IT strategy development, solution design, program and project delivery and service management, across multiple business lines. 

  • Track record in delivering business impact through process and IT enabled solutions

  • Experience with data fabric technologies and platforms.

  • Knowledge of data security and privacy regulations.

  • Experience with vendor management. 

  • Experience in Product Management

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, influencing and stakeholder management skills

  • Experience in the Life Sciences industry and of Pharmaceuticals processes and systems

  • Experience with SOX compliant systems

  • Domain knowledge and awareness of functional and technical emerging trends in one or more of the following areas:  Financial Planning and Analysis, R&D Pipeline Project Management; Data Fabric/Data Mesh strategies
